- LH014-022001 Castle - motte and bailey
Description
Situated on a slight rise at the S side of the River Glyde not far N of Mapastown church (LH014-023001-) and consisting of an almost circular, flat-topped mound (diam. at base c. 22m; at summit c. 5.5m, H 4-6m) with traces of a possible crescentic bailey (c. 26m E-W) defined by slight scarping at the W and N. There are possible slight remains of a fosse between the mound and the possible bailey. At the SE side of the summit of the mound there are traces of a stone structure (LH014-022002-), possibly a later fortification built by a regiment in the army of William III under the command of Colonel Bellingham when he held Mapastown bridge. Description
The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Undivided nave and chancel (int. dims. 4.2m by 4.8m) built of rough uncoursed limestone rubble and greywacke. E gable and N wall are completely destroyed down to their foundation courses. W gable has a double-splayed ope with slab lintels. S wall is featureless except for a doorway c. 4.5m from W gable. The doorway is 0.9m wide and has a reveal at each side. The double-splayed W window and the reveals on the doorway indicate a church of late medieval date. This site is adjacent to a possible motte (LH014-022001-). (CLAJ 1943, 207)

Description
Single-arch stone road bridge over River Glyde, built c. 1820. Ashlar limestone walling to parapet, rock-faced limestone string course, tooled limestone coping. Segmental-headed arch, rock-faced voussoirs, prominent keystone; arch flanked by rock-faced piers, finely tooled limestone caps. Rubble stone flanking wall to south-east and north-west, finely tooled coping to north-west. Modern tarmacadamed roadway.
