  Description

  The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Situated in low, arable land. Roughly circular, round-topped, earthen mound (diam. c. 16.5m, H 2.2-3m). Known locally as 'Mota-Cillin' (CLAJ 1965, 31) and 'Corrigan's Moat' (IFC Schools MSS 674, 162). Burials were reputedly found on the site (IFC Schools MSS 675, 97) and it was reported locally that 'a large flag', possibly a cist, was uncovered on the SSE side. This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 16/1977).

  Description

  The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Built of rough uncoursed limestone boulders, blocks and greywacke poorly mortared. It has no datable features and is in a very ruined state. A bank c. 0.5m high and 1m wide encloses an almost rectangular-shaped area measuring 33m N-S and 36m E-W. An ogham stone (LH022-014002-) is said to have been incorporated in the wall of the church and the enclosure is reputed to have been used as a killeen. (CLAJ 1944, 293)

  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1820. Rectangular-plan, gable-fronted porch to west, porch to east. Pitched slate roof, clay ridge tiles, smooth rendered corbelled chimneystack, cast-iron gutters to overhanging eaves, circular cast-iron downpipes; painted carved timber bargeboard with trefoil decoration to porch. Painted roughcast-rendered walling. Square-headed window openings, painted smooth rendered reveals and soffits, tooled stone sills, painted timber two-over-two sliding sash windows with horns. Segmental-headed door opening to west, painted smooth rendered reveals and archivolt, painted timber panelled door, fanlight; square-headed door opening to east, painted timber six-panel door. Single- (south) and two-storey (north) outbuildings attached to gable ends, further outbuildings to north and east of eastern yard, pitched slate and corrugated-iron roofs, barrel roof to north, painted roughcast-rendered walling, square-headed openings, painted timber fixed-light windows, painted timber vertically-sheeted doors, loop openings to attached outbuilding to north; painted wrought-iron gates to west of yard; orchard to east bounded by painted random rubble stone wall, square gate piers with pyramidal caps and ball finials, wrought-iron gate; house faces road to west with rendered plinth wall, steps down to door, smooth rendered ruled-and-lined gate piers, pyramidal caps, wrought-iron gate.

  Detached five-bay two-storey house, built c. 1850. Rectangular-plan, shallow porch to south, two-storey extension to north. Pitched slate roof, hipped roof to extension, red brick corbelled chimneystacks, clay pots, tooled stone verge coping, moulded cast-iron gutters on eaves course, square downpipes; single-pitched roof to porch, projecting eaves with painted sheeted soffit supported on painted metal brackets, painted timber carved eaves boards. Painted roughcast-rendered walling, smooth rendered walling to porch, smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walling to extension. Square-headed window openings, painted smooth rendered soffits and reveals, painted stone sills, painted timber two-over-two sliding sash windows, replacement to ground floor south elevation. Segmental-headed door; painted timber Doric panelled pilasters, foliate console brackets and cornice; painted timber panelled door; plain glazed fanlight. Set in own grounds; garden to south, concrete path from door to gate to west, bounded from road by wrought-iron railings on painted smooth rendered plinth, wrought-iron gate to cast-iron piers; courtyard to north, single- and two-storey rendered outbuildings, hipped and pitched slate roofs, segmental-headed carriage arch to east outbuilding, square-headed openings to north outbuilding, painted timber vertically-sheeted doors; wrought-iron gates to courtyard.

  Description

  Freestanding double-height single-cell Roman Catholic Church, dated 1846, with six-bay nave side elevations, single-bay three-stage entrance tower to east and single-bay single-storey vestry to west. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, rendered coping to gables and cast-iron rainwater goods on overhanging eaves. Roof to tower not visible behind parapet. Unpainted rendered, ruled-and-lined walls, with diagonal stepped buttresses at corners of nave and tower, and rendered dressing including string courses to each stage, advanced corner piers to top stage and battlemented parapet. Tall four-centred window openings to nave with cut stone sills, rendered block-and-start surrounds and keystones, one original painted Y-tracery small-pane timber window to north of nave, the remainder have later Victorian fixed-pane leaded stained glass windows. Fixed pane circular window to second-stage with diamond shaped rendered surround. Paired lancet openings to top stage of tower with rendered hood mouldings and louvered metal panel fittings with engrailed edging. Pointed segmental door openings to north and south of tower, with rendered block-and-start surrounds and keystones and tongue-and-groove timber panelled double doors. Interior to tower houses timber staircase leading to beautifully curved timber panelled gallery to first floor. Slender clustered shafts, with leafy stylised capitals support pointed keel-like vaults over a broad nave and narrow aisles, with carved timber pews below. The transverse ribs and rectangular panelling of the plaster vaults are painted blue and white. A timber pinnacled reredos sits against the altar wall. Set back from road in bitmac and grass churchyard.
