  Description

  The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Marked as 'fort' on the 1835 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Surviving portion of bank with possible remains of external fosse suggests that the site was a ringfort.

  Description

  Situated in an undulating landscape. The faint cropmark of a subcircular or heart-shaped enclosure (dims c. 65m NW-SE; c. 60m NE-SW) defined by a single fosse feature (Wth c. 2-4m) is visible on Google Earth (17/12/2013). It straddles the townland boundary between Nicholastown to the N and Reaghstown, and was first reported by Anthony Murphy.   The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Oval platform area (int. diam. 45m, H 2-2.6m) built on a natural rise and enclosed by much-degraded bank, reduced to a scarp. No visible trace of fosse or entrance. There is a gap (Wth 2.6m) on the WSW of the scarp, but it is uncertain whether this is the original entrance.

Ancient entrance at SE represented by a depression in the scarp. Possible souterrain (LH013-013002-) in interior.

  Description

  Freestanding gable-fronted Roman Catholic church, built c. 1830, remodelled 1867 and 1922. T-plan with single-storey flat-roofed extensions to south. Pitched slate roofs, clay ridge tiles, tooled limestone verge coping, carved limestone cross finials to gables, ashlar limestone pedimented shouldered bellcote, octagonal piers, crocketed pinnacles to north, moulded cast-iron gutters, circular downpipes. Painted roughcast rendered walling, smooth rendered plinth, channelled even quoins. Pointed arch window openings, painted smooth rendered surrounds, hood mouldings, square corbelled-stops, painted stone sills, painted timber Y-tracery, leaded stained glass windows, square-headed window openings to extensions. Pointed arch door opening, smooth rendered surround, hood moulding, label stops, timber traceried overlight, leaded stained glass panels, painted timber doors. Interior with painted smooth rendered walling, pointed arch reredos, hood moulding with mask stops, recessed round-arched panel with quatrefoil light, stained glass depicting images from Christ's life, timber gallery to north. Set within own grounds, concrete setting, carved stone cross grave marker to north-east, roughcast rendered boundary walling, smooth rendered coping, square-plan gate piers, pyramidal caps, decorative cast-iron railings and gates to north.
