Description
Situated in low-lying ground, the site consisted of a mound similar to Castleguard Motte (Dawson's Demesne, LH017-012001-) according to Tempest (1952b, part III, 147) who said that it was levelled about one hundered years before he remarked on it. It is also referred to in the OS Letters as being a small fort called 'the Liss' about a quarter of a mile NE of Ardee (Anon. 1922, 137). The above description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). Description
The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Drystone-built souterrain, L-shaped in plan, consisting of two passages and a beehive chamber. Passage 1 (L 8m, Wth 1.2m, H 1.3m) gently curves NE-W, terminating in drop-hole which gives access to Passage 2 (L 10.5m, Wth 1.1m, H 1.4m) running E-W (5.2m) then turning N-S (5.3m). This passage terminates at N end in a beehive chamber (diam. 2.4m, H 1.4m).
