  Description

  The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Situated roughly 27m from N edge of a marshy area, known locally as the 'Red Bog'. The site is recorded by Stubbs (JRSAI 1889, 272-4) as an oval area (max. dims. c. 30m by c. 22m) enclosed by a double ring of oak piles, set roughly 0.7-1m apart, with some morticed horizontal beams interspaced. There is a local tradition of a zigzag stone causeway from the N shore. No piles or surface features of the crannog are now visible, but the location is marked by a dense growth of bushes.

• LH012-065001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Discovered prior to road construction (Excavation Licence 99E0485). Three sections of ditches (one on E side, one on W side and one in between two) were excavated. A geophysical survey showed that the eastern and western ditch were part of the same circular enclosure (with a diam. of 41m). The excavator suggested that the ditches may represent phases in the construction of a ringfort. A large number of finds were recovered including ring pins, iron knives, souterrain ware and medieval pottery, a polished stone axehead, iron hooks, an iron reaping hook, industrial slag and a large quantity of animal bone.   Description

  Discovered prior to road construction (Excavation Licence 99E0485). Located beneath ringfort (LH012-065001-). U-shaped passage (L 28.1m; Wth c. 1m) with drystone walls and a lintelled roof. Majority of lintels were robbed probably sometime in the post-medieval period. Two levels with a chamber at the lower level. Finds recovered included Souterrain ware pottery, a bone bead necklace, a bronze panel with an enamel interlace decoration, iron slag and a large quantity of animal bone. • LH012-065003 Excavation - miscellaneous
  Description

  Discovered prior to road construction (Excavation Licence 99E0485). Two large pits were uncovered in close proximity to a ringfort (LH012-065001-) and souterrain (LH012-065002-). One was sub-circular in shape (max. diam. 1.10m; D 1.10m) and interpreted as a refuse pit. Finds recovered included a broken blue glass armlet, animal bone and industrial slag. The second pit was keyhole shaped (max. diam. 3.50m; D .90m) and contained a small quantity of animal bone. The excavator suggests that this pit may be interpreted as an unused corn-drying kiln.   Description

  Detached six-bay single-storey thatched dwelling, built c. 1750. Rectangular-plan, bowed entrance to north elevation. Straw thatched roof, five painted smooth rendered corbelled chimneystacks. Lime-washed roughcast-rendered walling, painted smooth rendered plinth course. Square-headed window openings, painted smooth rendered patent reveals, painted stone sills, painted timber six-over-six sliding sash windows; tripartite windows to east and west of bow. Square-headed door, painted smooth rendered reveals and soffit, painted timber vertically-sheeted, cast-iron door furniture, two tooled limestone steps to entrance. House set in own grounds, opening onto gravel drive, three-lined avenue leading north-west to road; circular profile rubble stone gate piers to roadway.
