• MA062-029 Enclosure
  Description

  In pasture, located on a rise. A road, on a NW-SE axis, skirts the rise at W−SW, and an old track, on a NW-SE axis, lies immediately to NW. This enclosure is shown on the 1837 and 1919 OS 6-inch maps as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 20-25m), with the perimeter at NE−S incorporated into a field boundary. It has been almost completely destroyed by quarrying. The entire interior area has been dug out to a depth of over 2m, leaving a narrow arc (L c. 20) of the original enclosing scarp/field boundary at NE−S. This raised rim of extant scarp (Wth c. 2m; H c. 1m) is faced externally with stone, and is located on top of an almost vertical drop (H c. 1.7m) which represents the slope of the natural rise, now cut to a vertical face. A short arc of enclosing scarp (ext. H c. 1.2) also survives at W, obscured beneath overgrowth. Another enclosure (MA062-030----) is located 20m to E. • MA062-030 Enclosure
  Description

  In level pasture, with an expanse of rough damp land to N. This enclosure, possibly a rath, is shown on the 1837 edition OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m); it is not shown on the 19191 edition. It has been levelled. The only trace visible at ground level is a low, stony scarp (H 0.6m) curving S−W in shallow arc (L c. 8m). A ruined semi-circular, stone-built vernacular limekiln (3m NW−SE; 2m NE−SW) is built into the scarp. The scarp appears to be a remnant of the SW arc of the enclosure, preserved because of the presence of the limekiln. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 25 November 2020

• MA062-031 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on a low rise. Ground falls away gently to S towards an area of wettish ground fed by a spring. There is a farmstead immediately to SW. Slightly raised, roughly circular area (25.8m E−W; 23.6m N−S) defined by a scarp, which has been largely incorporated into later field boundaries. At NNW–E the scarp (ext. H 1.2m at N, 0.6m at E) retains a low internal rim; at ESE–SSW it has been modified with an external facing of stone to serve as a field fence, and at SW–NW it has been replaced by a linear boundary fence, on NNW–SSE axis, which delimits the W side of a now derelict farmyard. The NW quadrant of the interior is noticeably raised, defined by a slight scarp which curves N−W through the centre of the interior. • MA062-031001 Souterrain
  Description

  In the interior of a rath (MA062-031----). Two large, horizontally-set stone slabs protrude from the S edge of an elevated area in the NW quadrant of the rath. Several smaller stones protrude from the sod immediately to NW of the slabs and c. 3m to NW is a surface depression. These features may be the remains of a souterrain. At the time of inspection in 1997, this area of the rath was partly obscured by field clearance debris and could not be closely examined.
