  The existing circuit is located in the townlands of Gorteen, Ardoughan, Kilemoremoy, Belleek, Ballina, Quignalecka, Quignashee, Ballyholan, Behy More, Corimla South, Carrownlabaun, Bunnyconnellan West, Rathreedaun, Drumsheen and Bunnyconnellan East, Co. Mayo. The proposed development will consist of: (i) The replacement (“restringing”) of the existing overhead line circuit conductor wires with a new higher capacity conductor including installation of a new fibre communication connection. (ii) The replacement of 20 no. of the 63 no. existing Intermediate Polesets (IMPs) with similar polesets. Any replacement polesets will be constructed at, or immediately adjacent to the existing structures that they will replace, will be along the same alignment as the existing line, with a height difference of between 1-2 metres, with the exception of IMP52 where the height difference will be 4 metres. (iii) The relocation of IMP49 on the Behy Road (townland of Ballyholan), to be replaced with 2 no. new polesets (IMP49 and IMP49A) to the east and west of the existing poleset, along the route of the existing line. (iv) The replacement of 3 of the 13 no. existing steel towers (angle masts) with similar structures. (v) The carrying out of civil works for tower foundation strengthening at 3 no. locations and monopole-foundation strengthening at 1 no. location and bar member replacement works at 3 no. locations. (vi) The replacement of hardware and fittings at all locations. (vii) The replacement of crossarms at 20 no. locations. (viii) All associated works within the existing Glenree and Moy substations to accommodate the uprated 110kV overhead line. (ix) Other temporary associated and ancillary development works required for the purpose of the uprate, including construction compounds, the installation of silt traps, silt fences, access tracks, ground protection mats and temporary watercourse crossings. (x) All associated site development works above and below the ground to gain access to the existing structures including vegetation clearance, remedial works on concrete shear blocks, replacement of individual tower members and bolts, replacement of hardware and insulators, replacement of dampers, installation of line identification and danger notices and anti-climbing guards, the provision of temporary access routes and other ancillary works necessary to facilitate the proposed development. The planning application is accompanied by a Natura Impact Statement.

• MA031-050 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In average pasture, located on low ridge, overlooking the confluence of the Brusna and Glenree Rivers, which lies 200m to W. Ground falls away gradually to NE and to SE. This rath consists of a raised circular area (23m.1m N-S; 23m E-W) enclosed by a well defined earthen bank (Wth 2.7m on W, 3.5 m on E; int. H 0.5-0.8m; ext. H 0.9m-1.2m on E), with a kerb of large stones on its inner face. A field fence encircles the site; the intervening gap (1.7m to S, 2m to W, 5.7m to NW) varies in width but it is possible that it partly preserves the line of an infilled fosse. The field fences merges with the external face of the rath bank at E. The rath interior is level, with a small heap of stones close to the bank at NW. There is a souterrain (MA031-050001-) in the SW quadrant. There is a low area/gap in the bank (Wth c. 2m) at NE, with a line of stones extending across the gap; it is unclear if this is an original entrance.   Description

  Located in the interior of a rath (MA031-050----), close to bank in the SW quadrant. A surface opening (0.4m x 0.6m), bordered on one side by an in situ lintel, reveals a passage or chamber (H c. 0.9m) of drystone construction. A displaced lintel blocks access to the passage. • MA031-051 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In undulating pasture, on low ridge, overlooking the confluence of the Busna and Black Rivers, which lies 160m to SE. Ground falls away gently to W and S. Good views. There is a farmstead immediately to SE. Raised circular area (30.4m N-S; 32.5m E-W) defined by bank (Wth. 5.3m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.25m to E) and elsewhere by a substantial scarp (H 1.9m to W) elsewhere. A low stone kerb is evident on the inner face of the bank at N−E. On 1922 OS 6-inch map, a field fence is shown encircling the site. This was removed during land reclamation, except for a section at SSW−NNW. The intervening gap between the surviving arc of field fence (Wth 1.5m; H 0.6-1.1m) and the rath bank varies (5.7m to SSW; 4m to NW), but it may preserve the line of an infilled fosse. The rath interior is highest W-NW, sloping gently from there towards the entrance gap to E. The entrance survives as a broad slumped area (Wth 4.5m) faced on N side with two large stones. There is a local tradition of a souterrain (MA031-051001-) in the interior.
