Description
In pasture, on a terrace on the E-facing slope of a ridge. Ground falls away from the edge of the terrace to E−SE, providing fine views over the estuary of the River Moy and Killala Bay. To W the ridge slope rises gently. A raised circular area or platform (20.5m E−W; 21.4m N−S) defined by a scarp topped in parts with remnants of a bank. The platform rises to a height of c. 1m above the surrounding field level. On the W half of the circuit the scarp (1.1m) retains a low lip/remnant of a bank (Wth 1.2m; int. H 0.1m) which barely rises above internal ground level. On the NW arc this has a rough inner kerb of stones. On the E half the scarp (H 1.24m) is higher, to compensate for the natural fall of ground, and broadly slumped, with large stones protruding randomly from it, and large stones and boulders strewn at its base. Slight traces of an infilled external fosse (Wth c. 3.5m) noted in 1995 were no longer evident in a subsequent inspection in 2017. A broad, poorly defined break (Wth c. 5m) in the scarp at W may be an original entrance. Covered in long grass, thistles, nettles, with two small twisted hawthorn bushes on the scarp at SE. A farm track, flanked by post and wire fences, lies immediately to N−NNE. There is are raths (MA014-066----; MA014-064----; MA015-092----) 175m to NNE, 270m to SSW and 400m to SE, respectively, and a court tomb (MA015-028----) is 400m to ESE. Description
In pasture, situated on a SE facing hillside. Raised circular area (diam. 22.9m) defined by a scarp. At ENE–SE the scarp is topped with a low earthen bank, faced externally with drystone masonry which is probably of relatively recent date. At the foot of the scarp is a shallow fosse (Wth. 3.1m; max. D 0.3m) which is truncated at W–NNW by a NE–SW field boundary. Projecting into the internal area from the scarp at S is a shallow rectangular depression (L 5.5m N-S; Wth 1m; max. D 0.2m) which may indicate a collapsed souterrain (MA014-066001-). This is a National Monument in State ownership (No. 631). Description
In pasture, located on level elevated ground. Immediately to S, the ground falls away in a gently slope towards the Palmerstown River, located 150m to SE. The rath is overlooked to W by a ridge. This rath, which is not shown on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps, was levelled in the past. It consists of a very low, circular platform (37.8m N−S; 37m E−W) defined by remnants of a bank/scarp, outside which are traces of two fosses (Wth c. 2-2.5m) with an intervening bank (W 2.5-3m); the whole can be traced at ground level for most of its circuit SSE−NE as low undulations and cropmarks. A rectangular paddock (c. 35m NNE−SSW; c. 20m WNW−ESE) truncates the E edge of the rath, and here the arc of the enclosing elements cannot be discerned at ground level. A farm track (Wth 3.4m), on a WNW−ESE axis, cuts through the S half of the rath. Three raths (MA014-064----; MA014-065----; MA014-066----) are located 485m to W, 400m to NW and 450m to NNW, respectively, and two raths (MA015-029----; MA015-030----) are located 490m to NE and 470m to ENE. There is a court tomb (MA015-028----) c. 70m to N. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 1 September 2017
