• MA031-001 Barrow - ring-barrow
  Description

  In pasture, prominently sited close to break of slope at SE end of a ridge. The location provides excellent views, with the Ox Mountains on the horizon at E−S, and Nephin Mountain and the Nephin Beg range visible to W. There is a stream c. 55m to S at the base of the ridge slope. Circular platform (diam.12.2m) enclosed by a fosse (Wth 1.8-2m) with an outer earthen bank (Wth 2.3m; int. H 0.7; ext. H 0.9m). Overall diameter is 20m. The outer bank is compact and well-defined, except for a low section at NW-NNE. At SE there is a causeway (Wth 1.4m) over the fosse, and a corresponding low area (Wth 0.6m) in the outer bank, but it is not clear if this is a primary feature of the barrow. To N, 0.8m outside the bank, is a low, sod-covered linear feature (L 4m; Wth 1.2m; H 0.6m) of uncertain significance; it may be a field clearance heap or remnant of a field division. • MA031-002 Enclosure
  Description

  In pasture, located on top of a roughly N-S ridge, close to a steep break of slope on the NW side. The location provides good views of surrounding undulating countryside. Approximately 20m to E, the ground falls away steeply to a narrow, wooded glen, with a fast flowing stream in its base. There is a more gradual fall of ground to S. This enclosure is depicted as circular on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps. It now has a roughly D-shaped plan, with relatively straight sides at N and E. It consists of a low platform (14m N-S; 15.5m E-W) defined by a degraded scarp (H 0.4m to E; 0.9m to W), with stones protrude along the top edge of the scarp. The scarp describes a gentle curve S−NW. The straight sections of scarp on the N, E and SE may be the result of modification of the enclosure in the modern era. An exposed section of the scarp on this side reveals a make-up of peaty soil and stones. The top of the platform is level, but the surface is uneven and broken by occasional stones protruding from the sod cover. At N a narrow field ditch (Wth 1m) separates the enclosing scarp from a field fence. To N of the field fence part of the ridge slope has been quarried out for sand. • MA031-009 Enclosure
  Description

  In an area of undulating average pasture, located on low rise, in garden of Glencarha House, which is located 20m to S. Raised, roughly circular area (15.7m N-S; 17m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 1.4m to N), which is enhanced by the natural slope of the rise. The scarp is well-defined at N–S, but is levelled to merge with the natural slope at SW–NW. The scarp is topped at NW−N by remnants of a bank (Wth c. 2m). • MA031-010 Mound
  Description

  In pasture, located at the base of a hill, on the top of which, c. 95m to NW, there is an enclosure (MA031-011001-) and a standing stone (MA031-011002-). To W and NW there is a flat expanse of wettish pasture. Nephin Mountain is visible at SW. Not marked on 1837-8 OS 6-inch map, but shown on the 1922 edition as an oval hachured enclosure (c. 15-20m N−S; c. 12-15m E−W). It has been levelled. At the location there is a roughly circular rise (diam. c. 20m; H c. 1m), difficult to measure as it grades into the surrounding ground. It is gently domed in profile, with a flattish top (diam. c. 10m) grading seamlessly into broadly sloping sides (Wth slope c. 5m). An eroded section showed it to be composed of compact sandy soil, with iron pan towards the base. The nature of this monument is unknown. • MA031-011001 Enclosure
  Description

  Encompassing a natural rise, which offers panoramic views, with the Ox Mountains defining the far horizon from E−NW, and Nephin Mountain looming at SW. It overlooks an expanse of flat wettish pasture, where a (MA031-010----), now levelled, is located c. 50m to SW. This monument is not shown on the 1837-8 OS 6-inch map, but it is shown on the 1922 edition as a circular hachured area, with a standing stone (MA031-011002-) in the centre. It is evident as a domed rise or hillock (c. 30m E−W; c. 20m N−S), with steeply sloping sides on the W half and a more gradual slope at E. A scarp (Wth. 1.2m; H 0.45m) is cut into the base of the slope at N−NE. Remnants of a low scarp (H 0.3-0.4m) defines the flat top of the hillock NE−SW, giving it the appearance of a platform (diam. c. 6m), on which the standing stone is located slightly off-centre to S. This may be a natural hillock, which has been modified to form a setting for the standing stone. It is partly obscured by gorse and bramble. • MA031-011002 Standing stone
  Description

  Prominently sited on a hillock which forms the highest point in the surrounding undulating landscape, and provides panoramic views, framed by the Ox Mountains at E-S, with Nephin and the Nephin Beg Range to SW-W. The hill, which may have been modified to form an enclosure (MA031-011001-), is defined by a steep slope on the W side, with a more gradual fall of ground to E. It overlooks a flat expanse of wettish pasture to W. Not indicated on the 1837-8 OS 6-inch map, but shown as ‘Standing stone’ on the 1922 edition. Upright stone slab (H 1.2; Wth 0.54m; 0.3m), rectangular in shape and in cross-section, with long axis oriented NNW-SSE. The top of the stone slopes down from N to S. The W face is slightly concave towards its base, and the E face is slightly convex. The stone now leans to E. A small boulder is wedged against base on N side.
