• MA038-002001 Field boundary
  Description

  In lowlying ground, in an area of cut-away bog. Portions of field walls were exposed when a field drain was dug in 1979 during land reclamation works (SMR file 1980). The top of the walls lay immediately beneath the sod at the top of the drain. Each wall consisted of two parallel rows of stone slabs (H c. 1m) set on edge with the intervening space (Wth c. 1m) infilled with smaller stones. One wall (exposed L 8-10m) was on a NW-SE axis, and there were two perpendicular walls, set c. 5m apart, extending from it to SW. The exposed lengths of walling were destroyed during the drain construction, but field walls may survives beneath the peat cover in the adjoining fields.   Description

  In pasture, located on the summit of a hill, which provides excellent views over the surrounding lowlying bogland, with Nephin Beg Mountain clearly visible to S. This standing stone is not indicated on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps. It consists of a squat, irregular-shaped upright boulder (L. c. 1.2m NNW-SSE; Wth c. 0.7m; H 1m).   Description

  In pasture, located on a slight rise in undulating terrain. Ground falls away gently to N–NW. There is a farmstead c. 40m to E. This possible rath is not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is shown on the 1922 edition as a circular, enclosure (diam. c. 20m). It has been levelled; there is no visible trace at ground level.   Description

  In rolling pasture, located on a rise. There is a stream/drain c. 230m to E. This monument, which was probably a rath, is shown on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps as a circular enclosure (diam. 20-25m), named ‘Lisheenpastia’. It has been levelled. A low, flat-topped rise (c. 16m N–S; c. 12m E–W) is evident at the location, defined by a broadly slumped slope, with the most pronounced fall of ground on the W side. According to local tradition, it was used as a children’s burial ground (MA038-018002-). There is another possible rath (MA038-019001-) and children’s burial ground (MA018-019002-) 180m to SSE, and a possible rath (MA038-020----) is located c. 190m to SE.   Description

  Within a possible rath (MA038-018001-). The placename, ‘Lisheenpastia’, and local tradition record that the interior of the possible rath was used as a children’s burial ground. It has been levelled; there is no visible evidence of graves at ground level. There is another children’s burial ground (MA018-019002-) within a possible rath (MA038-019001-) 180m to SSE, and another possible rath (MA038-020----) is located c. 190m to SE.   Description

  In wettish to average pasture, located on a rise. There is a stream/drain 130m to E and the Deel River is located 300m to S. This monument is shown on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps as a subcircular, ringfort-sized enclosure (diam. 25-30m), named ‘Lisheenarnagh’. It was levelled during land reclamation works; there is no visible trace at ground level. A field fence on NNW-SSE axis extends across the location. According to local tradition, the interior was used as a children’s burial ground (MA038-019002-). There is a possible rath (MA038-020----) 40m to NE, and another possible rath (MA038-018001-) with a children’s burial ground (MA018-018002-) 180m to NNW.   Description

  In pasture, located on a small drumlin. There is a stream/drain 80m to E and the Deel River is located 300m to S. This monument is shown on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps as a subcircular ringfort-sized enclosure (diam. c. 20m). It has been levelled; there is no visible trace at ground level. There is a possible rath (MA038-019001-) with a children’s burial ground (MA018-019002-) 40m to SW, and another possible rath (MA038-018001-) with a children’s burial ground (MA018-018002-) c. 190m to NW. • MA038-176 Burnt mound
  Description

  In rough, wettish pasture bordering the River Deel, which is 20m to S. Ground rises gently to N. This burnt mound is evident as a low, grass and moss-covered rise (diam. c. 6-7m; H 0.3m). A layer (D 0.2m) of black soil underlies the sod and overlies a concentration of heat-shattered stone in charcoal-rich soil. The exact limits of the mound are indistinct.
