• MA071-087 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In rough, wet pasture, located on a low rise, with good views, in gently undulating terrain. Ground rises gently to S. Slightly raised, circular area (53.5m E−W; 49m N−S) defined by a bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.8m, at S) which has been modified to serve as a field fence: the external face is cut quite vertically. The internal rim is very low on the N half so that here the bank is effectively reduced to a scarp (ext. H 1.6m). A farm track (Wth 2.2m), flanked on the outer edge by a field fence (Wth 1m; H 0.6-0.8m), skirts the rath at SSW−NE; it might preserve the outline of a fosse and outer bank but this is very uncertain. There are narrow eroded gaps (Wth c. 1m) at NE and on the S arc, and a slightly wider gap (Wth 2m) at SE. There is a sod-covered earth and stone mound (5.4m E−W; 3m N−S; H 0.6m), on which a small thorn bush grows, in the interior, to N of centre.   Description

  In pasture, located on a rise, overlooking a shallow basin of wet ground to S. There is a farmyard c. 40m to SW. Broadly oval platform (30m N−S; 36m E−W) defined by a scarp (H 0.8m at NE, 1.5m at S, 2m at SW−W). The scarp is quite substantial, and is incorporated into a field fence at NW−N, where it retains a slightly raised lip on its inner edge. It is lowest on the NE arc. It partly concealed by overgrowth and heaps of field clearance debris. The interior is fairly level, with an uneven and strewn with stones. A quarry pit (Wth c. 8m E−W; L 18m N-S) extends from the scarp at N towards the centre of the interior to S; it is partly filled with field clearance debris. • MA071-092 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Located on a rise in gently undulating pasture, in an area of mixed pasture and wetland. The Gweestion River is 150m to E. Roughly circular platform (29.3m N−S; 32.4m E−W) defined by an earthen scarp (H 1.4m at S, 2-2.3m at N). The scarp is rather dilapidated, with sections dug away at NW−N. It has a broad external slump at N−NE, and is incorporated into/truncated into a straight N-S field fence at E. At S−SW the scarp has been cut to the vertical, incorporates large stones and hawthorn bushes grow on it. The interior is grassy, with an uneven surface, with a noticeable dip or drop in ground level in the SE quadrant. An oblong depression (9.5m NNE−SSW; 5m WNW−ESE; D 1m at W, 0.6m at E) extends from the edge of the scarp at SSW into the interior to NNE –this appears to be the result of disturbance in the modern era. The scarp is ringed with hawthorn bushes, densest at S−W. A heap of field clearance stones is piled against the scarp at W. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 17 August 2021

• MA071-197 Enclosure
  Description

  In pasture, on a level area on a gentle E-facing slope which falls towards the Gweestion River. Not shown on any edition of the OS 6-inch mapping. Listed in the SMR (1991) and the RMP (1997) as a possible enclosure based on a feature visible in an aerial photo (SMR file: GSI M 689 -90; Roll 231, pr. 11). This area has undergone land reclamation and the field boundaries shown on the 1931 OS 6-inch map have been removed. There is no visible trace of an enclosure at ground level.
