• MA030-047 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on the narrow top of a steep-sided N–S ridge, with extensive views in all direction. Located towards the N end of the ridge where there is a more gradual fall of ground. Shown on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as a ringfort-like enclosure, and on the 1930 edition as a subcircular hachured enclosure (diam. c. 20m), incorporated into a later field boundary on the S side. • MA030-048 Moated site
  Description

  In pasture, located on the N side of a rise, overlooking to E a natural depression of wet ground. This moated site consists of a rectangular platform (32.5m NNE-SSW; 48m ESE-WNW) defined by an earthen bank, and enclosed by an external fosse. The bank (W 6.3m; int. H 1.35; ext. H 1.5m) is quite well preserved preserved at S, but elsewhere survives mainly as a scarp, lowest (ext. H 0.5m) at NE and E, which retains a slight internal lip in parts. The fosse (W 4.4m; ext. D 1.4m) is evident only on S side. Brambles and thorn bushes around the perimeter; interior grassy. There is a rath (MA030-049----) c. 200m to NE. • MA030-049 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In undulating pasture, located on a rise overlooked to the E by a N–S ridge. There is a moated site (MA030-048----) c. 200m to SW. This rath, named ‘Rucklagh Fort’on the 1837 and 1930 OS 6-inch maps, consists of a raised circular area (diam. c. 32m N–S) defined by an earthen bank (W 5-6m; int. H 0.2m at N, 1m at SSE; ext. H 2.4m at N, 2m to SSE), enclosed by a fosse (W 3.5m) with an external bank (W 4.5m; int. H 0.8m at N,1.2m to SSW; ext. H 1.4m at N, 0.45m at SSW). The inner bank has a well-defined external slope, but for much of its circuit retains only a low internal lip. In parts, stones protrude at the base of the inner slope, but it is unclear if these are the remains of a kerb. The fosse can be traced around the entire circuit, although at NNE-ESE it is evident only as a slight depression. The external bank has been removed at NNE-ESE. A break (Wth 2m) in the inner bank at E may represent the original entrance. In the level interior, close to the bank at W, there is an oval hollow (c. 6m N-S; 4m E-W) with a few stones protrude from its; it is largely obscured by overgrowth and its significance is uncertain. At ESE-S the fosse has been incorporated into the line of an old road or laneway, with the outer bank modified to serve as a field fence. The laneway continues beyond the rath to NW, where it has largely been levelled, and to S, where it is flanked by field banks. Much of the interior, is covered by a dense thicket of blackthorn and brambles; the perimeter is ringed with ash trees and thorn bushes. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 16 April 2018

• Coolcran Cottage, farm house, 1840–1869 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached five-bay single-storey "cottage farmhouse", extant 1869, on a T-shaped plan with single-bay (three-bay deep) two-storey off-central return (north). Now disused. Pitched slate roof on a T-shaped plan with clay or terracotta ridge tiles, rendered chimney stacks having stepped capping supporting terracotta or yellow terracotta octagonal or tapered pots, and remains of cast-iron rainwater goods on timber eaves boards on overhanging eaves forming "veranda" on cast- or wrought iron pillars. Rendered wall to front (south) elevation; limewashed lime rendered surface finish (remainder). Hipped square-headed central door opening with rendered surround framing timber panelled double doors having sidelights below overlight. Square-headed flanking window openings with cut-limestone sills[?], and rendered surrounds framing four-over-two timber sash windows. Square-headed window openings (north) with concrete sills[?], and concealed dressings including timber lintels framing one-over-one timber sash windows having part exposed sash boxes. Set in unkempt grounds.
