- MA030-031 Ringfort - rath
Description
In undulating, average pasture. There is an enclosure (MA030-032) c. 250m to SE. This rath, originally circular in plan, is enclosed by the remains of three banks with two intervening fosses. The E half of the rath has been levelled; this destruction pre-dates the early 1800’s as only the W half of the rath is shown on the 1837 OS 6-inch map. The remains consist of a slightly raised, semi-circular area (c. 23-25m N–S; c. 18-20m E–W) defined at S–NNW by an earthen bank (Wth c. 5m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 2m), with a fosse (Wth 5m) intervening between it and a second bank (Wth 4.7m; int. H 1.3m; ext. H 1.2m). Remnants of the second fosse (Wth 4m) and third, outermost bank (Wth 4m; int. H 0.9m; ext. H 1m) can be seen at S–SW and at NNW. The innermost bank is very low and eroded internally, but retains a pronounced external slope. The innermost fosse is well defined, but its external bank has been incorporated into the N–S line of a later field fence, which borders a road. The road skirts the W side of the rath, respecting its curve. It truncates/overlies the second fosse at WSW–NW, and appears to have truncated the third bank, although it is possible that remnants of this bank may be incorporated into the field fence on the W side of the road. On the levelled E half of the rath, the faint outline of the rath interior is discernible, but no trace of the enclosing banks and fosses are evident at ground level. Grass cover in the interior; dense brambles and thorn bushes on the banks at W. In undulating, average pasture. There is an enclosure (MA030-032) c. 250m to SE. - MA030-032 Enclosure
Description
In undulating average pasture, located on a rise. The ground falls away to S into a natural hollow before rising again. There is a rath (MA030-031----) c. 250m to NW. A roughly semicircular arc of field boundaries is shown at this location on the 1837 OS 6-inch map; a circular hachured enclosure is shown on the 1930 edition. The remains consist of a roughly circular area (26m N–S; 24m E–W), not noticeably raised, defined by a low, moss-covered stony bank. The bank appears most substantial (Wth c. 4m; int. H 0.55m; ext. H 0.4m) at SW, where it appears as a broad rise topped on its inner face with what appears to be the remnants of a wall (Wth 1.6m). Elsewhere the enclosing stony bank (Wth 2.6m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.6m, at NW) is narrower and more degraded. There is a loose scatter of stones throughout the interior and some bedrock protruding through the sod in the SW quadrant. In the N half a poorly defined sub-circular feature (max. dim. c. 5-6m), of indeterminate function, is outlined by a narrow ring (Wth c. 0.5m; H 0.2m) of stones. The poor degree of preservation, coupled with dense overgrowth, makes it difficult to determine the nature of this enclosure. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 13 April 2018
- MA030-033 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture, located on a rise in gently undulating terrain, with good views to E over lowlying wettish grassland. A farmyard lies immediately to N. The dilapidated outline of a roughly circular, raised area (diam. c. 30), defined by an irregular, degraded scarp or slope, can be discerned. At E the scarp merges with a natural fall of ground giving an overall height of c. 2m. A pronounced depression (Wth c. 3) outside the scarp at S may be an original fosse, but at the time of visit was largely obscured by an infill of domestic refuse. A linear depression or gully (Wth 3.5-4m; D 0.7m), on a NE−SW axis, cuts through the full width of the interior, possibly the remnants of a laneway. It is flanked on the W side by another linear depression or ditch (Wth c. 3m; D 0.7m). A farm road (Wth c. 3m), leading to the farmyard at N, skirts the rath, truncating its edge at the SW−W. Covered in rough grass, with blackthorn and hawthorn scrub and clumps of brambles. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 13 April 2018
