• MA103-004 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In hilly undulating pasture, with good views over lowlying land to N. An embanked circular enclosure (diam. 35-40m) is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, but not on later map editions. At this location there is an elongated rise (c. 18m E−W; c. 40m N−S) which resembles a gently domed hillock. Faint undulations at the base at E and S appear to be remnants of an enclosing scarp. • MA103-005 Designed landscape - tree-ring
  Description

  In hilly undulating pasture, with good views over lowlying land to N. Not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; shown on the 1916 edition as a wooded subcircular enclosure. A broadly oval area (c. 50m E−W; c. 43m N−S) incorporating a low rounded hillock with a relatively small area of level ground (diam. 10-15m) on the summit, from which ground falls away gently on the S half (H c. 2m) and more steeply on the N side (H c. 3m). A scarp (H 0.8-1m at S) is cut into the base of the slope; it is well defined and quite vertical faced and may originally have been faced with stones. A shallow quarry pit (diam. c. 10m) cuts into the NW slope, and a small portion of the enclosing scarp at E has also been dug away. The trees shown on the 1916 map are gone. • MA103-006 Designed landscape - tree-ring
  Description

  In hilly undulating pasture, incorporating a natural hillock with excellent views. Not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; shown on the 1916 edition as a wooded subcircular enclosure. An earthen bank/scarp (Wth 2m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.2m at SW), ringed with mature beech and ash trees and some scrub, encloses the top and steep N-facing slope of a hillock. The enclosed subcircular space (diam. c. 50-55m) has an oblong flattish area in the centre from which ground falls steeply to NW, N and NE. Three quarry pits (10-15m across) cut deeply into the N, E and S slopes. At N the base of the hillock is incorporated into an E−W field fence. The interior is grassy with clumps of brambles and overgrowth and a few hawthorn and ash trees. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 4 October 2022
