• MA093-053 Enclosure
  Description

  This record refers to an enclosure noted here by Knox (1911, 337) in the early 1900’s. He described it as a much ruined rectangular, platform-like enclosure scarped out of the lower E end of an esker, which was surrounded by marshy ground on three sides; it was located ‘in a field called Paurkeen Sam, “Sam’s little park” or “field”.’ The rectangular platform (c. 37m E−W; c. 17m N−S) was defined on the N, E and S sides by scarps (H 1.8-2m), with ‘a slight trace of a bank on the top of the eastern scarp’. On the W side there was what seemed to be a ‘great rampart’ scarped into the rising slope of the esker (Knox 1911, 337). The esker was largely quarried away in the late 20th century; there is now no visible trace of an enclosure. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 29 June 2022

• MA093-054 Enclosure
  Description

  In pasture, on a low rise in undulating terrain, with good but not extensive views. A rectangular enclosure bordered at SW by a NW−SE road is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; a hachured roughly D-shaped area, bordered on the straight side at SW by the road, is shown on the 1916 edition. The enclosure was visited by Knox (1911, 337) who described this as a slightly raised ‘D-shaped earthwork’ defined by a slight bank, enclosed externally by a fosse with a ‘trivial bank on the outside’. A D-shaped area (30.5m NNW–SSE; 16.5m ENE–WSW to the road) is defined on the curving side at NNW–S by a scarp (Wth slope 2.6m; ext. H 0.9m) with an external fosse (Wth 1.8-2m), and on the straight side to SW by a field fence bordering a road. The scarp retains a low internal rim in parts at NNW–E. The fosse is visible only as a slight depression, most distinct at NNW–E and petering out to S. The interior is very slightly raised. A matching rise in ground level is evident in the road bordering the enclosure, suggesting that the road may have truncated the W half the enclosure. Hazel and blackthorn bushes ring the perimeter and encroach on the interior. It is known locally as ‘The Lisheen’ (Waldron 1995, 12-13). Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 29 June 2022

• MA093-073 Burial
  Description

  In pasture, on the W-facing slope of an esker, beside a N–S farm track which is cut into the base of the esker. According to local information, a stone-covered feature was discovered here in 1931 during the construction of a farm track on the W-facing slope of the esker. At the time of discovery, there was considerable uncertainty as to the exact nature of the find. It was interpreted by some as a possible souterrain, but an article in the Western People (9th May 1931) described it as resembling a grave, 'about 6 feet long and 2 feet wide, under a slab of stone'. Bones discovered at the location, at first thought to be human, were subsequently identified as animal; they were reburied at the location and the feature was reburied. At the location, there is a semi-circular depression (c. 6m N–S; c. 4m E–W) cut into the esker slope, but no trace of the structure itself is visible. • MA093-108 Fulacht fia
  Description

  This fulacht fia was discovered in 2002 during pipelaying on the Ballyhaunis Water Supply Augmentation Scheme. The portion of the fulacht fia (6m NE-SW; 7.6m SE-NW; max. D 0.29m) which lay within the pipeline wayleave was excavated (02E1777) (Guinan 2014, 1-14). The fulacht fia had been disturbed in the past by cultivation and drainage trenches. It consisted of a low, irregular-shaped mound of heat-shattered sandstone fragments in a matrix of charcoal-rich soil. An subrectangular, earth-cut trough (2.01m NNW-SSE; 1.19m ENE-WSW; D 0.4m) was located at the SW edge of the mound. A piece of struck chert was recovered. Radiocarbon analysis of two charcoal samples produced dates of 3320+/- 20 BP (1681-1657 cal BC) and 3335+/-45 BP (1736-1709 cal BC) which indicate use of the fulacht fia in the Middle Bronze Age (1700-1200 BC) (Ibid., 8-9).
