  Description

  In the Ox Mountains c. 1.5km SE of Foxford village, located in an upland heather- and sedge-covered valley bordered at W and E by rocky ridges. The valley is concealed from view but has extensive views NW−NE over Lough Conn, Foxford village and its surrounding lowland. Natural erratic (3.5m N−S; 2.4m E−W; H 1.4m) embedded in the ground surface. The roughly diamond-shaped stone has vertical sides at W and SW and sloping sides at E and SE. It has an irregular-shaped top (c. 1.5m N−S; c. 1m E−W), which appears relatively flat but has a slight convex profile. According to local tradition, this stone was used as a mass rock in the Penal Era. A rocky bluff, defined on W, N and E side by cliffs, is located c. 300m to NE. It is named ‘Carranarah’ on the 1930 OS 6-inch map, and is known locally as ‘Braid’. It provides excellent views over Foxford village and of approach routes to the site of the mass rock, and according to tradition, served as a lookout point while the mass rock was in use. A warning whistle of approaching danger was blown using hollowed out cabbage stalks thus allowing the priest time to escape (pers. comm. Tommy Doherty, Foxford, November 2015). Tuck pointed coursed rock faced cut-limestone wall to upriver (south-west) elevation centred on drag edged rock faced limestone ashlar triangular cutwaters to piers having drag edged tooled cut-limestone pyramidal capping with drag edged rock faced cut-limestone stringcourses supporting parapets having lichen-covered drag edged rock faced rough hewn limestone coping. Series of seven round arches with drag edged tooled limestone ashlar voussoirs. Sited spanning River Moy with grass banks to river.

  Detached three-bay double-height single-cell Board of First Fruits Church of Ireland church, built 1801; dated 1801, on a rectangular plan with single-bay three-stage tower to entrance (west) front on a square plan. Renovated, 1939. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, lichen-covered tooled cut-limestone coping to gables, and replacement uPVC rainwater goods on roughcast cut-limestone eaves with cast-iron rainwater goods (south) retaining cast-iron downpipes. Fine roughcast battered walls on rendered chamfered plinth; fine roughcast surface finish (tower) on rendered chamfered plinth with tooled cut-limestone stringcourses including paired tooled cut-limestone stringcourses (bell stage) supporting tooled cut-limestone octagonal pinnacles framing battlemented parapets having tooled cut-limestone "saddleback" coping. Corrugated-iron-covered walls on cement rendered base.
