  Description

  In backyard, used as lawn. Circular area (diam. c. 32m), enclosed by remains of low earthen bank. Undulations of land make interpretation difficult. The above description has been derived from D. Lavelle (compiler), An Archaeological Survey of Ballinrobe and District including Lough Mask and Lough Carra. Lough Mask and Lough Carra Tourist Development Association (1994), No. 459. • MA118-022002 Religious house - Augustinian friars
  Description

  On slightly raised ground, just above former flood plains of River Robe. Founded c. 1312, probably by Elizabeth de Clare; first Augustinian house in Connaught. Buildings repaired in 1400 and 1431. Friars in occupation in 1574 and again after rebellion of 1641 (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 296). Had its own seal (now in the British Museum). Excavated prior to restoration and conservation (1990-1994) by FAS/LMLCTA. Church (7.1m N-S; 34.6m E-W) consists of a nave and chancel; parts of W doorway with rope fluting are original while window overhead was retrieved from E gable. E tracery window not original; reconstructed based on original fragments. On S wall are two piscinia and a sedilia. Also on S wall, splayed windows contain two distinct mason marks. Building of unknown function on NE external corner of church; accessed through doorway and steps in N wall. Much of S aisle surviving with narrow doorway connecting it to nave; contains piscina. Narrow doorway on N wall gives access to square side chapel with widely splayed embrasure containing narrow light. Cross slab (MA118-022012-) found beneath W doorway during excavations.   Description

  On the E bank of the Robe River, adjacent to Ballinrobe abbey (MA118-022002-), on the northern outskirts of Ballinrobe town. Earthworks were noted here in the 1980's by Bradley and Dunne (1989, 24) who recorded them as follows: 'There are numerous undulations in terrain in the field immediately to the west and north of the abbey [Ballinrobe abbey (MA118-022002)] but these form no coherent pattern.'   Description

  Discovered beneath W doorway of abbey (MA118-022002-) during excavations, 1992. Now set beneath E window, in abbey interior. Limestone slab (L 1.67m; Wth 0.45m; T 0.18m), cracked in two pieces. Narrow stemmed cross (L 1.45m; Wth 0.39m) with round terminals, incised on upper surface. Sides of upper surface of slab have been chamfered, very rough in parts.   Description

  Single-arch road bridge over canal, dated 1845; extant 1849. Repointed snecked limestone walls with drag edged tooled cut-limestone stringcourses supporting benchmark-inscribed parapets having drag edged tooled cut-limestone "saddleback" coping centred on cut-granite date stone ("1845") in dragged cut-limestone surround. Single segmental arch with repointed drag edged rusticated limestone ashlar voussoirs. Sited spanning canalised Robe River with retaining wall to canal having tooled cut-limestone coping.

Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles terminating in rendered chimney stack having "Cyma Recta" or "Cyma Reversa" cornice capping supporting yellow terracotta pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves retaining cast-iron downpipe. Rendered, ruled and lined walls with rusticated rendered quoins to end. Rendered shopfront to ground floor. Square-headed window openings (upper floors) with concrete sills, and moulded rendered surrounds framing one-over-one timber sash windows. Street fronted with concrete footpath to front.

  Terraced three-bay two-storey house with dormer attic, extant 1838, on a symmetrical plan with pair of shopfronts to ground floor. In use, 1990. Reroofed. For sale, 2009. Now disused. Replacement pitched artificial slate roof on wind braced timber construction with pressed ridges terminating in rendered chimney stack having stringcourse below capping supporting terracotta or yellow terracotta tapered pots, paired rooflights to front (south) pitch, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered cut-limestone eaves retaining cast-iron downpipe. Rendered, ruled and lined walls on rendered chamfered plinth with rusticated rendered pier to end. Round-headed central door opening approached by two drag edged tooled cut-limestone steps with drag edged dragged cut-limestone block-and-start surround centred on fluted double keystone framing glazed timber panelled door having overlight. Timber shopfront to left ground floor. Rendered shopfront to right ground floor. Square-headed window openings (first floor) with drag edged dragged cut-limestone sills, and concealed dressings framing two-over-two timber sash windows. Interior including (ground floor): central entrance hall-cum-staircase hall retaining timber surrounds to door openings framing timber panelled doors, staircase on a dog leg plan with timber "match stick" balusters supporting timber banister terminating in timber newel, and run moulded plasterwork cornice to ceiling; (first floor): fittings now missing. Street fronted with concrete footpath to front.

Rendered, ruled and lined wall to front (west) elevation with rusticated rendered piers to ends; cement rendered surface finish (remainder). Rendered shopfront to ground floor on a symmetrical plan. Square-headed window openings (upper floors) with rendered sills, and moulded rendered surrounds framing one-over-one timber sash windows having part exposed sash boxes. Interior including (upper floors): timber surrounds to door openings framing timber panelled doors with timber panelled shutters to window openings. Street fronted with concrete footpath to front.

Roof not visible behind parapet with drag edged dragged cut-limestone central chimney stack having "Cavetto" stringcourse below capping supporting terracotta or yellow terracotta pots, and concealed rainwater goods. Tuck pointed snecked rock faced limestone walls on benchmark-inscribed dragged cut-limestone chamfered cushion course on plinth with drag edged dragged cut-limestone quoins to corners supporting "Cavetto"-detailed cornice below limestone ashlar blocking course. Square-headed door opening (east) with two cut-limestone steps, and cut-limestone block-and-start surround having engaged colonette-detailed chamfered reveals framing timber panelled door having overlight. Square-headed window openings (ground floor) with cut-limestone sills on "Hollow" consoles, and cut-limestone block-and-start surrounds having chamfered reveals framing replacement aluminium casement windows replacing one-over-one timber sash windows.
