• MA062-076 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On the E outskirts of Swinford town, located just below the summit of an E–W ridge. The ridge is cloaked in woodland. This enclosure has been partly levelled. It is evident as a circular area (diam. c. 25m) defined by remnants of a bank/scarp. At S–SW the scarp (H 1.6m) remains quite pronounced where it merges with a natural fall of ground, but elsewhere the enclosing bank is reduced to a slight rise or undulation, from which stones protrude in parts. On the N arc there is a slight inward-facing scarp. The interior is not raised, and appears slightly sunken on the N arc. It is planted with trees and obscured by overgrowth. • MA062-077 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture on the E outskirts of Swinford town, located on a rise, overlooked by a ridge of higher ground to SW. Slightly raised broadly oval area (52.4m N–S; 46m E–W) defined by an earthen bank and enclosed by a fosse and external bank. The inner bank (Wth 5.5-6m; int. H 1.3m at W, 0.2m at E; ext. H 2.2-2.5m) is low and degraded internally, especially on the E half, but retains a substantial external slope. The fosse (Wth 4m) is well defined, except at N–NE where it is silted up. The external bank (Wth 2.6m at E, 3.2m at W; int. H 0.5m at E, 1m at W; ext. H 0.4-0.5m) is very degraded, surviving W–N as a low rise, interrupted at N–ENE by a break (Wth 10m), and at E–SE as a stony undulation. At SSE–W it has been incorporated into or truncated by a field boundary that respects the curve of the enclosure. The centre of the interior consists of a flat-topped raised area (23m N–S; 19m E–W) from which there is a broadly sloping fall of ground, dropping by c. 0.7m at S and c. 1.15m at N, towards a narrow perimeter ring of lower, flat ground just inside the rath bank. There is a shallow depression (Wth 4m; D 0.4m) on the inner edge of the bank in the SE quadrant. At E, where the enclosing banks are lower in height, there is a break (Wth 2m) in the inner bank and a corresponding break (Wth 4m) in the outer bank, which may be an original entrance. There is a hint of a causeway across the fosse but this is greatly eroded by farm stock. Another entrance-like break (Wth 4m) is located in the inner bank at SSW, which has a ramp-like slump (Wth 3.4m) into the fosse, partly defined on the S side by stones. There are also breaks in the inner bank at N (Wth 3m) and at S (Wth 4m). The inner edge of the fosse at SE has a vertical stone facing against which a corrugated iron cattle shelter has been erected. The rath interior is covered in grass, rushes and yellow flag, and the perimeter is thickly ringed with hawthorn, hazel, brambles and gorse. • MA062-084 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, on the E outskirts of Swinford town, located on top of a ridge, overlooked to W by a higher ridge, and with good views to N–NE and S over valleys of low lying ground. Oval area (33m ENE–WSW; c. 25m NNW–SSE) defined by a stony earthen bank (Wth 2.2m; int. H 0.45m; ext. H 0.9m, at S). At N–E the bank is largely reduced to a scarp (ext. H 1.5m at NE), at E–SW it serves as a field boundary and has been faced with stone, and at W–NNW it has been quarried away leaving a steep, irregular, slightly concave slope (H 1.7m). A NNW–SSE field fence clips the W edge of the rath and at N a field fence on a roughly E–W axis skirts the scarp in a shallow arc. At NE two other field fences abut the rath. Stones protrude from the sod along the top of the bank/scarp and the inner edge of the scarp at NE is edged by three large stones. • MA062-089001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on top of a ridge, which provides excellent views in all directions over the surrounding undulating grassland. Raised oval area (39.4m N-S; 31.8m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 2m at N and S) and enclosed by an external fosse (Wth 3.8m). The scarp is cut almost to the vertical, most likely as a result of modification of the rath in the modern era. The fosse is evident at NE−SE as a broad, shallow depression. The entrance may have been at the ENE where the interior slumps towards a low section of the scarp, which has a poorly defined ramp-like slope (Wth c. 4m). The interior is higher in the SW quadrant, sloping gently from there to N and E. In the raised area at SW an oblong depression indicates the location of a souterrain (MA062-089002-). Remnants of an E-W field bank cross the N half of the interior, and traces of cultivation ridges on a roughly E-W axis are visible throughout the interior. There are animal burrows in the SW quadrant. A small heap of stones is piled against the scarp at SE. There is a rath (MA062-088----) 220m to N and a rath (MA062-087001-) 300m to NW; two enclosures (MA062-090----; MA062-091----) are located c. 140m and c. 240m to SSW, respectively. • MA062-089002 Souterrain
  Description

  In a rath (MA062-089001). A collapsed length of souterrain passage is located in the slightly raised SW quadrant of the rath. It is evident as an oblong depression (8.6m NE−SW; 2.3m NW−SE; D 0.65m) with a deeper cavity (D c.1m) at the SW end, from which two stone slabs protrude. These slabs appear to be roof lintels.   Description

  In pasture, located on a slight rise. Shown on the 1887 edition OS 6-inch map as a circular embanked enclosure (diam. 15-20m), with a cluster of vernacular buildings/houses immediately to N, and a road, which leads S from this settlement, passing immediately to E of the enclosure. It is not shown on later map editions. There is no visible trace at ground level. According to local information, the field is named ‘Caisleen’. • MA062-096 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on a slight rise in an area of relatively lowlying grassland, with a small lake located c. 100m to NNW, beyond which is a ridge of higher ground. There is a derelict cottage c. 25m to NE. A slightly raised circular area (37m N–S; 36m E–W) defined by stony bank/earthen scarp (Wth 2.9m at E, 4.3m at W; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1m at E, 1.6m at W). The bank is rather dilapidated, retaining only a low, stony internal lip. At SW–WNW there is considerable stone tumble on the external slope, and at NW–NNE it is modified with internal stone facing to serve as a field fence/property boundary that respects the curve of the rath. There is a break (Wth 3m) at NE. At SW–W a drystone field wall (Wth 1m), set 2.5m out from the rath scarp, curves around the rath, merging with another field wall that abuts the rath at the W. The intervening gap between the curving field wall and the rath may preserve the outline of a fosse. A slight depression (Wth 2m) outside the scarp at NW–N may also be evidence of a fosse. The interior has a slight dip in ground level in the SW quadrant, and is bisected slightly E of centre by a field wall on a NNE–SSW axis. The perimeter is ringed with hawthorn and blackthorn bushes. • MA062-097 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  In pasture, located on the S boundary of the townland on a rise, in an area of relatively lowlying grassland. A small lake is located c. 250m to N, beyond which is a ridge of higher ground. Broadly oval, substantially raised area (c. 37m E–W; c. 42m N–S) defined by a stone-faced earthen scarp. At the wall base, is a broadly sloping, sod-covered terrace or berm-like feature (Wth 4.5m, top 2m; H 1.4m). This appears to be earthen but has a stony spread, probably wall tumble, on the surface. The external face of the enclosing wall is well-constructed of medium and large-sized blocks of stone, and rises to a height of 1.5-2m. At SSE a section of the wall is lower (H 1m) and more crudely constructed. At W a portion (L 6m) of the wall face has collapsed. Internally, the wall is not intact, but has collapsed to a partly sod-covered, broad tumble (Wth 3-5m) of stones. On the W half this has an internal height of 0.5-1m but on the E half is evident merely as a low spread of stones more or less flush with interior ground level. There is a break (Wth 0.6m) in the wall at NE, and another break (W 2m) in the inner wall face at SW, which has been blocked externally by later walling. The interior has a gentle slope down to SE in the E half. At the SSE–S there is a drop (H 1.1m) in the interior ground level marked by a short length of stone-faced scarp (H 1.1m). A meandering, elongated heap (Wth 2-5m; H 0.6m) of stones extends for several meters through the W half of the interior on a roughly S–NW trajectory; it is partly obscured by overgrowth. A collapsed souterrain (MA062-097001) on a roughly NW–SE extends through the centre of a slightly raised roughly rectangular area in the SE quadrant. A field wall/property boundary crosses the cashel on a NNE–SSW axis. At NE–SSW the townland boundary coincides with the enclosing wall of the ringfort. A thicket of blackthorn and hazel covers much of the interior; the perimeter is ringed with hawthorn. This appears to be a cashel but the raised interior is a rather unusual for a cashel. • MA062-097001 Souterrain
  Description

  In a cashel (MA062-097----). A subrectangular, slightly raised area (Wth c. 6m NE–SW), with a stone-strewn surface, extends on a roughly NW–SE axis through the SE quadrant of the ringfort. Bisecting the central long axis of this rise is a grassed-over, shallow depression (L 9m NW–SE), which represents a collapsed and roofless souterrain passage. Intact drystone side walls (H 0.6m) can still be seen along a 2m long section of the depression, indicating a passage width of c. 0.65m. The SE end of the passage expands into a roughly circular cavity (diam. c. 1m; D 0.8m), lined with drystone walling, possibly a small chamber. • MA062-098 Enclosure
  Description

  Located in an area of gently undulating average pasture. This possibly rath is shown on the 1837 and 1919 OS 6-inch maps as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m), bisected slightly W of centre by a road on a N−S axis. It has been levelled. The enclosure has been levelled. The road survives as a farm track (Wth 3.5m), bordered by field walls. A slight but noticeable rise (L c. 30m NS) in the surface of the track indicates the marks the N−S limits of the enclosure, but no trace of the enclosure is visible in the fields flanking the track. • MA062-102001 Cairn - unclassified
  Description

  Located in a broad, flat expanse of cutaway bog, bordering Killaturly Lough which lies c. 400m to NE. Ground rises to NW Circular heap (10.5m E-W; 10.6m N-S) of stones, protruding from a covering of peat and heather. There is sub-circular depression (max. dim. c. 2.5m) in the centre, possibly the result of disturbance of the cairn. In the centre of the depression on its N edge, is a partly peat-covered, sub-rectangular concentration of stones (1.8m NW-SE; 0.9m NE-SE) flanked on the NW side by a single upright stone slab (L c. 1.2m NNE-SSW; T 0.12-0.33m; H 0.65m). At the NNE end of this upright, a second stone can be glimpsed, possibly set perpendicular to it. These features suggest that the cairn may incorporate a cist-like structure at its centre, but the remains are difficult to record and interpret due to the thick covering of peat and heather.
