• MA072-033001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, on elevated ground in an undulating landscape of gravel hills, with a small river c. 70m to W. There is a farmyard immediately to SE. Roughly circular area (c. 33m NW–SE; c. 35m NE–SW) defined by an earthen scarp, with a break at ENE–ESE where the scarp has been levelled. The scarp remains well-defined at SE–SW (H 0.9m) where it is incorporated into a field fence, and is enhanced by the natural fall of ground. At W–N the scarp appears to be terraced into the natural slope, giving the effect of a double scarp: an inner scarp (H 1.3m ; Wth slope 1.2m), then a berm or terrace (Wth 2.7m) defined on its outer edge by another scrap (H 1.8m; Wth slope 3.8m;) with a pronounced slope. The scarp peters out at N–NE, and has been removed at E. The interior is bisected centrally by a property fence on a NW–SE axis. Roughly in the centre of the interior, there is a slightly raised D-shaped area or platform (9m NW–SE; 4m NE-SW; H 0.3-0.6m), defined on the straight side by the field fence. It is possible that this feature was originally circular and extended to SW beneath the fence, however, this could not be ascertained as the ground surface to SW of the fence has a disturbed appearance and is largely obscured by blackthorn scrub. According to local tradition, there was a children’s burial ground (MA072-033002-) and a possible souterrain (MA072-033003-) in the interior. A farm track, on a NW–SE axis, and sunk to a depth of 0.5m cuts across the W edge of the interior. A rath (MA072-032----) is located 220m to SW.   Description

  Description

  In a rath (MA072-033001). According to local information, a small stone-built chamber, covered by a single flagstone, was discovered in the rath; it was partly destroyed and blocked up. • MA072-034 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on top of a ridge, with a steep fall of ground to N, overlooking an expanse of poorly drained pasture and bog at N–NE. There is a small pool c. 30m to W and a river c. 200m to W. The rath has been incorporated into the environs of a now ruined, vernacular farmstead. Raised circular area (33m N–S; 29m E–W) defined NNE–SE by an earthen bank (Wth 3.4m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 1.75m at NE), reduced elsewhere to a scarp (Wth 1.8m at SW) which retains a slight internal lip in parts. The bank has been modified to serve as a field boundary. This is particularly evident at SW–NE where the scarp presents an almost vertical face with traces of stone facing in parts. Two vernacular stone-built sheds abut the scarp at SE and SSE. Between the two sheds there is gap (Wth c. 3m) in the scarp that may mark an original entrance. There are a number of other low or degraded sections in the scarp, including a break (Wth 1m) at NNW, but these appear to be the result of erosion by stock and farm activity. The perimeter is ringed with elder, hawthorn, blackthorn, and gorse; the interior covered by long grass. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 31 March 2021

  Description

  At Knock International Airport. This possible megalithic tomb was included in the 1991 SMR (1991) and the 1996 RMP (1997) on the basis of information from a local source (SMR file). • MA073-034 Burial mound
  Description

  Located close to the S boundary of Knock International Airport. This monument is not indicated on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. It was discovered during construction work at the airport in 1981, but its exact location was not recorded at the time (NMI Correspondence Files). It was listed in the SMR (1991) as an unlocated mound and was not listed in the RMP (1997). It was rediscovered in 2009 during an archaeological assessment (pers. comm. M. Byrne, 2009). It consist of a grass-covered mound (max. dim. 15m E−W; H c. 2m), which according to local tradition may have been used as a Famine burial ground or a children’s burial ground.
