• MA121-062 Castle - tower house
  Description

  Poor remains of a tower on a prominent mound with good aspect. So deep are the present ruins in the mound, that it must have contained a basement. Sections of all but the E wall are evident giving an overall outline 9m N-S by 10m E-W. Nowhere do outer and inner facing stones correspond while rubble fills the area within and outside the building to a considerable depth. A later residential building (int. dims. 18m N-S; 5.5m E-W) stands close to the N end of the tower. It contains two fireplaces and a gable chimney at its S end. The low remains of field banks and walls to the E, S, SW, and W survive of a possible associated medieval village. The above description has been derived from D.   Description

  In SE quadrant of an ecclesiastical enclosure (MA121-065003-). This church (4.9m N-S; 10.4m E-W) is recorded by Lavelle (1994, 81 no. 592) as follows: ‘Originally quite small (4.9m N-S; 5.8m E-W), but a chancel was added to the E end. Only sod-covered foundations of N, E and S walls survive but W end contains a partly damaged trabeate doorway (H 1.8m; Wth 0.6m, at base). Dressed stonework of doorway contrasts with undressed, roughly coursed stonework of remainder. Site dedicated to St. Kieran. • MA121-065003 Ecclesiastical enclosure
  Description

  On slight rise, in undulating pasture. Subrectangular area (58m N-S; 76m E-W), enclosed by substantial bank of earth and stone (H 0.2m to 1.3m; Wth 1.8m). Interior contains oratory, burial ground (MA121-065002-) and a series of internal divisions on N side, formed by low banks of earth and stone. Oratory (4.9m N-S; 10.4m E-W), stands on SE side of interior. Originally quite small (4.9m N-S; 5.8m E-W), but a chancel was added to the E end. Only sod-covered foundations of N, E and S walls survive but W end contains a partly damaged trabeate doorway (H 1.8m; Wth 0.6m, at base). Dressed stonework of doorway contrasts with undressed, roughly coursed stonework of remainder. Site dedicated to St. Kieran. Holy well (MA121-065004-) to E.   Description

  Detached four-bay single-storey direct entry thatched farmhouse, extant 1838, with single-bay single-storey flat-roofed projecting porch. Renovated. Pitched roof with part mesh-covered straw or wheat thatch, exposed hazel or sally lattice stretchers to raised ridge having exposed scallops, fine roughcast dwarf chimney stack having "Cavetto"-detailed stringcourse below capping, and concrete or rendered coping to gables with fine roughcast dwarf chimney stack to apex (north-east) having "Cavetto"-detailed stringcourse below capping. Replacement cement rendered battered walls; limewashed surface finish to rear (north-west) elevation over coursed rubble limestone construction. Square-headed window openings with shallow sills, and concealed dressings framing replacement timber casement windows. Square-headed opposing door openings with concealed dressings framing glazed timber panelled doors. Set in landscaped grounds on a corner site with hedge boundary to perimeter.
