- MA080-030 Ringfort - rath
Description
Located on elevated ground, on the W edge of Kiltimagh town. This rath was extant when inspected in 1984. At that time, it was evident as a slightly raised area (diam. c. 40m) enclosed by an earthen bank at S–NW, truncated at N−NE by a road (SMR file). The rath was subsequently levelled and its outline is no longer discernible. A modern house and garden overlie the E–SE half of the rath and another house overlies the NW edge. The middle section of the rath is subsumed into a pasture field. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 2 December 2021
- MA080-031 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture, on the N outskirts of Kiltimagh town, located on a ridge with good views. Ground falls away steeply to N−NW to a flat expanse of wettish pasture. There is a factory 100m to ESE and a housing estate 70m downslope to S. Raised circular area (37m N−S; 36.5m E−W) defined by levelled enclosing bank or wall which is evident as a low sod-covered earth and stone rise (Wth 5-8m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.45m), with a broad external slump. It is topped at W−SE by a later drystone field wall (Wth 0.6m; H 1.2m). A poorly defined break at SW allows tractor access to the interior, and may mark an original entrance. There is a loose heap of boulders and slabs on the W side of the gap. A large horizontal slab protruding slightly from the sod roughly in the centre of the level interior covers a blocked up souterrain (MA080-031001). The S arc of the rath is covered in overgrowth. Description
Located in a rath (MA080-031----). A large horizontal slab protrudes slightly from the sod roughly in the centre of the rath interior. This is a roof lintel, possibly slightly displaced, covering a blocked up souterrain. A slight surface subsidence suggests that the souterrain passage or chamber extends to S. Description
Located on elevated ground with a fall of ground to N. The rath is now subsumed into the E side of Kiltimagh town, with residential development on all sides. Raised circular area (32m E–W; 32m N–S) defined by a substantial earthen bank (Wth 3m; int. H 0.9m; ext. H 2m at W; 2.4m at E), and enclosed by a fosse (Wth 3m) with an external bank (Wth c. 2.5m; H c. 0.5m at NE). The outer bank, much of which is engulfed in hawthorn, blackthorn and brambles, appears to be relatively intact SW–NW but on the N and E it has been greatly modified and subsumed into linear property fences. A section at SSE–SW was destroyed during the construction of a housing development immediately to S of the rath, but was subsequently reconstructed. The original entrance appears to have been at the NNE where there is a gap (Wth 3m) in the inner bank, with a causeway across the fosse. The corresponding gap in the outer bank is blocked by a later property boundary. The grassy interior has a slight slope down from the centre towards the NE. There is a possible souterrrain (MA080-032001-) close to the bank at S. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 2 December 2021

Description
Located within rath (MA080-032----). Adjacent to the bank in the S of the rath interior, a slab is visible in a slight surface hollow. This may be a roof lintel of a souterrain. Difficult to examine; obscured by a clump of brambles and field clearance boulders. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 2 December 2021
