  In rough grazing land. Roughly circular area (35.5m N-S; 41m E-W), enclosed by low earthen bank (H 0.5m), levelled N to E. Two linear earthen mounds in interior. The above description has been derived from D. Lavelle (compiler), An Archaeological Survey of Ballinrobe and District including Lough Mask and Lough Carra.   Description

  Detached three-bay (two-bay deep) two-storey house with dormer attic, extant 1894, on an L-shaped plan; single-bay (single-bay deep) two-storey return (east). Occupied, 1901; 1911. Renovated, 2000-1. Replacement hipped slate roof on an L-shaped plan with pressed iron ridges, paired red brick Running bond central chimney stacks on axis with ridge having cut-limestone stringcourses below capping supporting terracotta pots, paired rooflights to front (west) pitch, and uPVC rainwater goods on cut-limestone eaves with cast-iron downpipes. Repointed coursed rubble limestone walls originally rendered on cut-limestone chamfered plinth with drag edged rusticated cut-limestone quoins to corners. Segmental-headed central door opening with timber mullions on drag edged tooled cut-limestone step threshold supporting timber transom, and yellow brick block-and-start surround centred on drag edged tooled cut-limestone keystone framing replacement timber panelled door having sidelights on panelled risers below fanlight. Square-headed window openings with drag edged dragged cut-limestone sills, and yellow brick block-and-start surrounds centred on drag edged tooled cut-limestone keystones framing replacement six-over-six timber sash windows. Round-headed central window opening to rear (east) elevation with yellow brick block-and-start surround framing fixed-pane timber fitting. Set back from street with "Fleur-de-Lys"-detailed cast-iron railings to perimeter centred on "Fleur-de-Lys"-detailed cast-iron gate.

• Ballinrobe Union Workhouse, workhouse, 1835–1845 · Regional interest
  Description

  Remains of Union Workhouse complex, designed 1840; built 1840-2; dated 1841; opened 1841, including: Detached five-bay two-storey "Front Block" on a U-shaped plan with pair of single-bay (single-bay deep) full-height returns (south). Partly occupied, 1911. Damaged, 1922. Closed, 1926. Renovated, 1993[?], to accommodate alternative use. Now disused[?]. Replacement pitched slate on a U-shaped plan incorporating gablets to window openings (first floor) with pressed ridges, lichen-covered drag edged tooled cut-limestone coping to gables on drag edged tooled cut-limestone thumbnail beaded kneelers, and no rainwater goods surviving on exposed timber rafters with replacement uPVC rainwater goods to rear (south) elevation on exposed timber rafters. Tuck pointed snecked limestone wall to front (north) elevation on drag edged tooled cut-limestone cushion course on plinth with lichen-covered dragged cut-limestone "Hollow" stringcourse (first floor); repointed coursed rubble limestone walls (remainder). Tudor-headed central door opening below drag edged cut-limestone date stone ("1841") with cut-limestone step threshold, and drag edged tooled cut-limestone block-and-start surround having chamfered reveals with "Hollow" hood moulding over framing replacement timber boarded or tongue-and-groove timber panelled double doors. Square-headed flanking window openings with cut-limestone sills, and drag edged tooled cut-limestone block-and-start surrounds having chamfered reveals with "Hollow" hood mouldings over framing replacement timber casement windows. Square-headed window openings (first floor) with cut-limestone sills, and drag edged tooled cut-limestone block-and-start surrounds having chamfered reveals framing replacement timber casement windows. Set in redeveloped grounds with tarmacadam footpath to front.

• Ballinrobe Railway Station, station master's house, 1890–1895 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey railway station master's house, opened 1892; extant 1894; occupied 1901, with three-bay two-storey rear (north-east) elevation. Suspended, 1947. Closed, 1959. Renovated to accommodate continued private residential use. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles terminating in fine roughcast chimney stacks having "Cavetto" capping supporting terracotta or yellow terracotta pots, and replacement uPVC rainwater goods on timber eaves boards on cut-limestone eaves retaining cast-iron downpipes. Tuck pointed snecked rock faced limestone walls with red brick flush quoins to corners. Square-headed window openings with drag edged dragged cut-limestone sills, and red brick block-and-start surrounds framing replacement aluminium casement windows replacing two-over-two timber sash windows. Set in own grounds with rear (north-east) elevation fronting on to street.
