• MA092-036 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In improved pasture, located on a natural rise. Not indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; depicted on the 25-inch plan and the on the 1917 OS 6-incn as a broadly oval enclosure (40m NW−SE; 35m NE−SW). On the 25-inch plan a field boundary is shown curving around the S arc, possibly marking the outer edge of a fosse; this is not shown on the 1917 OS 6-inch map. The enclosure, which was most likely a rath, has been levelled. When inspected in 1998, a cropmark of stunted grass representing a levelled bank/scarp was visible, outlining a roughly circular area (diam. c. 40m).   Description

  Located on the level top of a ridge, close to the break of slope on the SW side, with good views over a narrow valley to SW and of rolling pasture to NE. There is a possible rath (MA092-036----) 150m to N. A small embanked circular enclosure (diam. c. 10-15m) is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; a hachured circular feature is shown on the 1917 edition. • MA092-101 Ringfort - cashel
  Description

  In average pasture, straddling a terrace on the NE-facing slope of a ridge overlooking Mannin Lake (now drained) to N–NE. There are good views also to SE–SW over undulating grassland; views are less extensive to NE and SW along the spine of the ridge. This cashel is not shown on the 1838 and 1917 OS 6-inch maps. Circular area (c. 85-90m NE–SW; 90m NW–SE) enclosed by a low, sod-covered stone bank (Wth 3.5-4m) at SW–N, by a ruined field wall at NE–E, and by a combination of a low scarp and a later field wall at E–SE. The enclosing element has been entirely removed on the S arc. A field wall/townland boundary crosses the interior roughly centrally on a NE–SW axis. Remnants of two other field boundaries traverse the enclosure on a NW–SE axis, partitioning the interior into four roughly equal strips. Two of these partitions survive as drystone walls in the SE half of the interior but are reduced to low stony banks or scarps in the NW half. The partitions coincide with a series of changes in level/terracing in the interior, mirroring the natural slope from SW down to NE. This partitioning of the interior appears to date to the early modern era, and cultivation ridges associated with it are visible in the NW half of the interior. • MA093-016 Enclosure
  Description

  In good pasture, on a level raised terrace, marked by a steep slope to NNE, which gives way to a gentler, undulating fall of ground levelling out to bog on the margins of Island Lake (now drained). It is overlooked to S by a hill. A circular hachured enclosure is shown on the 1916 OS 6-inch map. It has been levelled but its outline (diam. c. 20m) can still be partly traced. An ephemeral undulation at SW–NNW delineates the W arc and a curving scarp (H 1m) is cut into the natural slope at N–NE, now crossed on the N edge by a straight NW–SE field wall.
