• MA092-066 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on the top of a ridge at the break of slope on the S-facing side. There are very good views to S over an expanse of lowlying pasture; views to NW–NE are less extensive along the undulating spine of the ridge top. Oval raised area (26m E–W; 21.5m N–S) defined by a scarp (H 1.4m at N, 2m at S). It is crossed centrally by a property fence on a N–S axis. To W of the fence the remains are clearly defined, but to E of the fence the rath has been partly levelled, surviving as a broadly slumped slope. The scarp has a vertical face with remnants of stone facing at SE–S where it was incorporated into an E-W field fence, now removed. There is no clearly defined entrance feature, but it may have been at NE where the scarp is lowest. The N half of the interior is level and there is a slope from centre down to S. • MA092-067 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, prominently sited on a low ridge, with extensive views in all directions. This rath is depicted as a roughly circular embanked enclosure (diam. 45-50m) on the 1838 and 1917 OS 6-inch maps. It has been levelled but the ephemeral outline of a roughly circular area (c. 40.6m N–S; c. 44.5m E–W) can still be discerned. A gap (Wth c. 5m) at the E may indicate the original entrance. According to local information, it was enclosed by a substantial earthen bank with an external fosse and possibly an outer bank; in the interior is a souterrain (MA092-067001-). • MA092-068 Enclosure
  Description

  In pasture, encompassing the top of a low rise. Shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m), and on the 1917 edition as a semi-circular hachured feature. This enclosure has been levelled; the ephemeral outline of a roughly circular area (diam. c. 15m) can be discerned at ground level, merging with the natural contours of the rise. • MA092-069 Enclosure
  Description

  In improved pasture, located on a rise in gently undulating terrain, with good views in all directions and overlooking Lough Crokery to NW. On the 1838 OS 6-inch map it is located on a small peninsula which jutted into the S end of the lake; by the time of the 1917 edition drainage has caused the lake levels to recede to a distance of c. 80-100m to N of the enclosure. This possible rath is depicted on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m); only the W half is depicted on the 25-inch plan and the 1917 6-inch edition where a fosse and external bank are shown. • MA102-015 Enclosure
  Description

  In the NE corner of a field improved pasture, located on a rise with excellent views to S–SW over an expanse of lowlying pasture. Not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; shown on the 1916 edition as a shallow hachured arc curving N−SE, truncated at its N end by a NW-SE field boundary. The arc of bank (Wth 2.8m; int. H (on N) 0.5m; ext. H 1m) can be traced NE–SSW in a shallow curve (diam. c. 21m NE–SW), curving to SW from the intersection of two field fences that form the N and E sides of the NE corner of a modern field. The N field fence is distinguished by an abrupt scarp (H c. 2m) on it N side. The remains may represent the E–SE quadrant of an originally circular enclosure. Hawthorn trees grow on the arc of bank.
