• MA063-003 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, on the W edge of Charlestown, located on a prominent rise, with a steeply sloping sides at NNW−E, overlooking a flat expanse of damp pasture. Indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular embanked enclosure, and on the 1920 OS 6-inch map as subcircular hachured enclosure (diam. c. 30m), with an arc of external fosse at N, truncated on the E side by a N−S field boundary, and another field boundary traverses the W part of the interior on a NW−SE axis. This possible rath has been levelled. The outline of the enclosure can still be traced at NW−S at ground level as an area of rough ground and differential vegetation growth, defined by the natural fall of ground. A NW/SE field fence/property boundary cuts across the SW edge. To SW of this fence, the original enclosing bank (Wth c. 3.5m; int.H 0.1m; ext. H 1m) survives as a scarp, with a slightly raised internal rim, which can be traced in a shallow arc S−W; it is covered in gorse, brambles and ferns. • MA063-004001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Located on a rise, incorporated into the grounds of a school, on the SW edge of Charlestown village. Raised circular area (34.6m NW−SE) defined by an earthen bank, and enclosed at WSW−N by a fosse and external bank. The substantial inner bank (Wth 5.8m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 1.75m at NW) is best preserved at NW−N, and is lower at E (ext. H 0.8m). A field wall, on a NNW−SSE axis, clips the external slope of the bank at E−S; the field wall borders the W side of a laneway which overlies or truncates the fosse and external bank. The fosse and external bank can still be traced at WSW−N, where the fosse is evident as a shallow depression (Wth c. 4m), and the external bank survives as a low stony rise (Wth 4m; int. H 0.1-0.3m; ext. H 0.6m), planted with conifers. The interior is level, with an uneven surface, with dense overgrowth obscuring much of the E and SE half. At the time of an inspection in 1996, there was a recently dug rectangular trench (L 7.5m NW−SE; Wth 0.7m; D 0.3m) in the NW half of the interior, and another shallow trench (Wth 1.4m) could be seen beneath overgrowth on the E side of the interior. In a previous inspection in 1982, a gap (Wth c. 3m), was noted in the bank at SE, possibly indicating the location of an original entrance (SMR file: OPW field notes 1982); it was engulfed in overgrowth during the 1996 inspection. The 1982 report recorded the local tradition that the rath was used as a children’s burial ground (MA063-004002-). The rath is densely ringed by conifers and ash trees, and much of the interior is obscured by overgrowth. There are heaps of soil of earth and debris against the external slope of the bank at SW−W.   Description

• MA063-005 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In rough, damp pasture, located on a rise the W bank of the Mullaghanoe River, a small N-flowing river/stream. Roughly D-shaped area (c. 51m E−W; 59m N−S) defined by a bank, and enclosed by an external fosse. The straight side is at E. and lies parallel to the river, which probably dictated the D-shaped plan. The enclosing bank (Wth 9-10m at W, 5.9m at E; int. 1.1m at W; 0.55m at E; ext. H 2.4m at W, 3m at E) is substantial, particularly on the W half. The fosse (Wth 4.4m at W, 4.8m at E; ext. D 0.7-1.1m at W−SW; 1.2m at E) is broad; the N arc it is less well defined and shallower; at E it is flat-based, and wettish in the base. There is a stone wall on the outer edge of the fosse on the W arc, with remnants also on the N arc –this appears to be a later field wall. The 1838 OS 6-inch map shows a small looping branch of the river passing directly by the straight E side of the enclosure, and, according to local information, in the past the stream flowed through the fosse on the straight E side of the rath. By the time of the 1920 edition, the river appears to have been canalised, and its course changed slightly; a flat, dry gap (Wth 5m) now intervenes between the fosse and the stream. At the NE, there is a break (Wth 4m) in the bank and a narrow stony causeway (Wth 1m) across the fosse. There is another break (Wth 2m) in the bank at SE, and outside this the line of the fosse is partly infilled or obliterated. According to local tradition, there is a souterrain (MA063-005001-) in the W half of the interior, and a children’s burial ground in the NW quadrant. The rath is densely ringed with blackthorn; interior obscured by ferns. There is another rath (MA063-004001-) 175m to N, and an enclosure (MA063-006----) 190m to SW. • MA063-006 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on top of a slight rise, in gently undulating terrain. This possible rath has been partly levelled. It consists of a slightly raised circular area (29m NE−SW; 26m NW−SE) defined by low, partly levelled bank. The bank has a low raised internal rim, which slopes seamlessly into the interior, and a broadly slumped exterior scarp (H 0.6m at E, 0.7m at W), producing the effect of a slightly saucer-shaped profile. Outside the bank on the SW arc there is a shallow depression (Wth 3.5-4m), probably a fosse; it is not evident elsewhere around the circuit. There is a poorly defined gap/low area (Wth c. 4m) at SE, which may mark an original entrance. There are clumps of brambles in the W half of the interior; hawthorn and ash trees on the perimeter. There is a heap of field clearance stones at the E end of the arc of fosse. A low NE-SW field bank abuts the enclosure at NW. A rath (MA063-005----) is located 190m to NE.   Description

  In pasture, located on SE-facing slope bordering the W bank of the Mullaghanoe River. A roughly circular surface spread (diam. c. 15m) of heat-shattered stone in a matrix of charcoal-rich soil was visible in August 1998 c. 3m W of the river bank. The remains were exposed during clearance of scrub from the river bank. There is another burnt spread (MA063-065----) c. 35m to S and a rath (MA063-005----) is located 30m to SW.   In pasture, located on SE-facing slope bordering the W side of the Mullaghanoe River .   Detached eight-bay double-height Catholic church, begun 1855; consecrated 1858; extant 1895, comprising six-bay double-height nave opening into six-bay single-storey lean-to side aisles centred on two-bay double-height chancel (east). Renovated, 1974-5, with sanctuary reordered. Reroofed, 2000. Replacement pitched slate roofs with lean-to slate roofs to side aisles, clay ridge tiles, lichen-covered dragged cut-limestone coping to gables on drag edged tooled cut-limestone kneelers with cut-limestone Cross finials to apexes, lichen-covered dragged cut-limestone coping to gable to entrance (west) front on drag edged tooled cut-limestone kneelers with repointed drag edged tooled limestone ashlar gabled bellcote to apex, and uPVC rainwater goods on timber eaves boards on exposed timber rafters retaining cast-iron downpipes. Tuck pointed snecked rock faced limestone walls repointed, 1995, on drag edged tooled cut-limestone chamfered cushion course on plinth with drag edged tooled cut-limestone stepped buttresses including drag edged tooled cut-limestone clasping buttresses to corners having drag edged tooled cut-limestone "slated" coping. Cinquefoil window openings (clerestorey) with drag edged tooled cut-limestone surrounds having chamfered reveals framing storm glazing over fixed-pane fittings having lattice glazing bars. Cusped lancet window openings in bipartite arrangement (side aisles) with drag edged tooled cut-limestone block-and-start surrounds having chamfered reveals framing storm glazing over fixed-pane fittings having stained glass margins centred on leaded stained glass panels. Pointed-arch window opening to chancel (east) on cut-limestone stringcourse, drag edged tooled cut-limestone block-and-start having chamfered reveals with hood moulding over framing storm glazing over fixed-pane fittings having stained glass margins centred on leaded stained glass panels. Set in landscaped grounds with cruciform-detailed rendered, ruled and lined chamfered piers to perimeter having "Cavetto"-detailed gabled capping.

  Description

  End-of-terrace three-bay two-storey house with dormer attic, extant 1880, with shopfront to ground floor. Closed, 1998. Disused, 2007. Pitched artificial slate roof with clay ridge tiles terminating in rendered, ruled and lined chimney stacks having stepped capping supporting terracotta or yellow terracotta tapered pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves retaining cast-iron downpipe. Rendered, ruled and lined walls with rusticated rendered pier to corner. Timber shopfront to ground floor on a symmetrical plan. Square-headed window openings (first floor) with concrete sills[?], and moulded rendered surrounds framing one-over-one timber sash windows having part exposed sash boxes. Street fronted with concrete footpath to front.
