• MA063-034 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on elevated ground, overlooking a small river, which is located 30m to the W. There is a narrow strip (Wth 4m) of level ground immediately to W of the rath, beyond which ground falls steeply to the river bank. An E-W road (N 5) lies immediately to S. This rath is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a roughly circular enclosure (diam. c. 25-30m), with a possible arc of fosse and external bank at NE; on the 1920 edition it is shown as a D-shaped hachured enclosure, with the straight side at S−SW. The rath was severely damaged by quarrying in the early 20th century,: the only portions of the rath that remain intact are a semi-circular arc of bank at NW−SE, with a 2m wide strip of interior just inside the bank at NW−N. There is a deep, grassed-over depression (c. 15-20m across), with a heap of stones in the base, immediately to NW of the rath, probably another quarry. • MA063-036 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In a stand of deciduous and coniferous trees, with a farmstead immediately to E and pasture to N. There is an E−W road (N 5) immediately to S. Raised circular area (30m N−S; 28m E−W) defined by a substantial earthen bank (Wth 5m; int. H 0.75-0.85m at N & S, 1.4m at W; ext. H 1.6m at S, 2.3m at N & W). The bank is well preserved for most of the circuit; stones protruding from its inner face in parts, possibly remnants of a stone facing. A section of the bank at NE is partly levelled, and is abutted by a garden shed and a wall. There is a hint of a depression (Wth c. 3m) outside the bank at W, which might be indicative of a fosse, but it cannot be traced elsewhere. A gap (Wth c. 2m) at SE may be an original entrance, as the rath is lower here relative to exterior ground level. The interior is level, and contains a souterrain (MA063-036001) in the W half. Trees ring the bank and are thinly scattered through the interior. The interior ground surface is obscured by ferns, ivy, bluebells, pine needles and leaf mould. • MA063-036001 Souterrain
  Description

  In a rath (MA063-036----). According to local information, there is a souterrain in the W half of the rath interior. It was accessible in the early 20th century, when a surface opening revealed a drystone-built chamber or passage. The opening was later infilled. When the rath was inspected in 1996, a large slab, possibly a displaced lintel, was visible protruding from the ground surface in the NW quadrant of the interior; this may mark the location of the souterrain. • MA063-037 Enclosure
  Description

  In pasture, located on a rise, which provides good views over the surrounding undulating terrain. Indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 20-25m) truncated on its S edge by an E−W road; it is not shown the 1920 edition. At this location there is a rise or hillock with steep, broadly sloping sides, which are several meters high; the S side of the hill is truncated by the E-W road, giving the hillock a D-shape plan. The hillock has a flat top (diam. c. 20m E−W); this may have been enclosed to serve as an enclosure, but no trace of an enclosure is now evident.
