• MA081-009 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on a low rise with good views. A circular embanked enclosure (diam. 20-25m) is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is depicted as a semicircular hachured feature, open to S on the 1919 edition. This rath survives as a roughly semi-circular platform (24.7m E–W; c. 10m N–S) defined on the curving N half by a scarp (H 0.8m-1m). At W a short length of dilapidated earth and stone bank (Wth 2.8m; int. H 0.8m) tops the scarp. A roughly circular quarry pit (diam. c. 12m) has destroyed the S half of the interior.   Description

  In pasture, located on a gradual NE-facing slope, overlooking an expanse of low-lying wet pasture. Lough Caldragh is c. 200m to N, beyond which there is rising ground. This possible rath is not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, but is shown on the 1919 edition as oval hachured enclosure (c. 20-25m NW−SE; c. 19m NE−SW). • MA081-012001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on the level top of a NW–SE ridge, close to the break of slope on the SW side. Level ground extends for c. 30m to NE of the rath then there is a steep fall of ground. There are with panoramic views, restricted at SE by rising ground. Circular platform (37m E–W; 37.5m N–S) defined by a scarp (ext. H 0.4m at N, 0.7m at S), outside which it is enclosed by a fosse with an external earth and stone bank. A few stones protrude from the top edge of the scarp, possibly representing remnants of a kerb. The fosse (Wth 4.5-4.8m) is well defined. The external bank (Wth 4.6m at S, 5m at N; int. H 1.5m at S, 1.8m at N; ext. H 1.6m at N and S) is topped at NNW–S by the sod-covered remnants of a drystone field fence, with stone tumble evident on the slopes. The original entrance may have been at E where there are traces of a causeway across the fosse and a gap, now blocked up, in the external bank. There is also a low area in the scarp at S with a corresponding gap (Wth 1m) in the external bank, but this appears to be a relatively recent break, related to erosion by farm stock. The interior has a slight slope down to E and S in the SE quadrant. In the NW quadrant there is a shallow irregular shaped grassed-over depression (L 8m E−W; Wth c. 2m; D 0.3m), expanding slightly at its E end. The rath interior was used of as a children’s burial ground (MA081-012002-); a few small stone protruding from the ground in the S and W part of the interior may be gravemarkers. • MA081-013 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on a roughly E–W ridge, close to a break of slope at NE where the ground falls steeply into a valley of wettish ground. A slightly raised circular area (32.4m E–W; 31.9m N–S) defined by a bank, outside which it is enclosed by a fosse with a possible external bank. The inner bank (Wth 2.5-3m; int. H 0.45m; ext. H 0.9m at S, 1.4m at NE) is most substantial at NE–SE and incorporates much stones, most likely as a result of its modification to serve as a field boundary; a section at NW–NNW has been quarried out. The fosse (Wth 1m) is evident at SSE–SW as a shallow and unusually narrow depression, and cannot be traced elsewhere. At N a low rise (Wth c. 3.6m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.2m) borders the external edge of the fosse for a length of 7m, and a slight, stony outer rim borders the fosse at S–W, possibly remnants of an external bank. There is a break (Wth 1.2m) in the inner bank at SSE. The rath interior is built up higher at N–NE to compensate for the ridge slope, and there is a gentle slope down from the centre to E. Much of the NE quadrant has been quarried out to a depth of c. 2m. The rath interior is grass covered, with a slight encroachment of blackthorn scrub in the W half; hawthorn bushes ring the external bank.   Description

  In pasture, located on a roughly E–W ridge, with panoramic views over the surrounding rolling grassland; Nephin Mountain is visible on the horizon to NW. Circular platform (5m N–S; 6m E–W; H 0.3m) enclosed by a fosse (Wth 3–3.4m) with an external bank (Wth c. 3m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.45m) of earth and stone. Overall diam. (crest of ext. bank): 14.3m N–S; 15.3m N–S. The external bank has a broad, high external slope (ext. H 1.15m) at N–NE where it merges with the ridge slope; at WSW–N it is truncated on its exterior edge by a modern NE−SW field wall. Three hawthorn bushes grow on the bank.   Description

  In pasture, located on a low rise in a lowlying area overlooked to SW and NE by higher ground. Oval flat-topped stony mound (9m E-W; 6.6m N-S; H 1m at E, 1.4m at W) with broadly slumped sides. It is partly sod-covered around the base where a number of large stones and boulders protrude at SW and E. The top of the mound consists predominately of small stones, possibly field clearance. According to local tradition, the field in which the cairn is located is known as 'Labbaderrig' or 'Leaba Dearg' and it is said to be the burial site of a giant who lived in a castle.   Description

  In pasture, located in a flat expanse of boggy ground, adjacent to a drainage ditch. When inspected in 1998, an exposed area (diam. c. 1m) of burnt stone and charcoal was apparent on a slight rise in surface ground level (diam 2-3m), possibly a levelled fulacht fia. It was not possible to determine its exact limits. There is fulacht fia (MA081-053----) c. 65m to NW. Rathnaguppaun Castle, a tower house (MA081-15001-) is located c. 30m to SE.   Description

  Located in a flat expanse of boggy ground. A farm track, bordered by a drainage ditch, is located 6m to NW, forming the W boundary of the field. Low, roughly circular mound (diam. 7.7m) with a slight central depression, possibly indicating the position of a trough. A small section, denuded by farm stock, reveals characteristic burnt stone and charcoal fragments.
