  Description

  In fairly level grassland; views good but not extensive, best to S; restricted now by trees to E. This possible moated site is indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a straight-sided embanked enclosure, diamond-shaped in plan; it is shown on the 1919 edition as an irregular oblong hachured area open to E. It has been levelled. The outline of a slightly raised roughly square (with rounded corners) or subcircular area (21m N−S; 21m E−W), defined by broad low undulation or levelled scarp, can still be traced. The levelled scarp is quite well defined on the S (Wth c. 5m; H 0.7m), W, and N sides, but is barely discernible at E. There is a rath (MA051-004) 80m to SE. • MA051-004 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In a thicket of overgrowth immediately adjacent to a farmstead. Raised circular area or platform (27.3m N−S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.7m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.6m, at NW). The bank is rather low and degraded on its internal slope. The external slope of the bank at N merges with an E−W field fence. A N-S field fence, bordered by a track/road, clips the external face of the bank at W. There is a ramp-like gap (Wth 1.5m) in the bank at SE, and a broad, eroded gap (Wth c. 5m) at W. The perimeter is ringed with sycamore and ash trees; there is a tangle of long grass, nettles and brambles in the interior. There is a possible moated site (MA051-003----) 80m to NW. • MA051-005 Moated site
  Description

  In rough, rush-grown pasture, located on a slight S-facing slope. There are very good views to S and good views E and W; views to N are restricted by rising ground, and by field fences and trees. This possible moated site is shown as a circular embanked enclosure on 1838 OS 6-inch map; as trapezoidal on the 25-inch plan and as subrectangular on the 1919 OS 6-inch. Roughly trapezoidal earthen platform (28.5m N−S; c. 20m E−W at N, 25m at S) defined by a bank/scarp (H 1m at N; Wth 3.5m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1m at S) which retains a slightly raised internal rim, and enclosed by an external fosse. At N the fosse is evident as a band (Wth 2m) of rushes and yellow flag iris; on the SE, S and W sides the fosse (W 2m at S, 2.5-3m at W; D 0.3) is evident as a rush-grown depression which merges with later field drains –it is difficult to determine to what extent its current appearance is original or results from cutting/recutting of field drains. • MA051-006 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, in an area of mixed grassland and bog; ground falls away gently to S, giving good views. Slightly raised circular area (30.5m N−S; 33.4m E−W) defined by an earthen bank (4.2m at S) and enclosed by a fosse. There is a remnant of an external bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.5m) on the S arc; it has been levelled elsewhere. The rath has been modified as a result of incorporation into a system of later field boundaries, which abut it at NW and SW, and the bank on the W arc serves as a field fence. The inner bank is generally low on its internal face; the external face is cut quite vertical, especially towards the base. The inner face of the external bank is also quite vertical-faced. The fosse is evident as a shallow depression on the E half of the circuit; on the W arc there is a narrow, shallow depression (W 1.4m) which may be a later field ditch cut into the original line of the fosse. The rath interior is level. There is a gap (Wth 2m) in the inner bank at SE which may indicate an original entrance. The interior is grassy; the bank at W, where it serves as a field boundary, is thickly covered in blackthorn; elsewhere the bank is dotted with hawthorn bushes.   Detached six-bay double-height Catholic church, extant 1895, on a rectangular plan comprising five-bay double-height nave opening into single-bay double-height chancel (east); single-bay single-storey gabled projecting porch (north-west). Renovated, ----, with sanctuary reordered. Reroofed, ----. Replacement pitched artificial slate roofs; replacement pitched (gabled) artificial slate roof (porch), clay ridge tiles with wrought iron Cross finials to apexes, concrete coping to gable (porch) on "Cavetto" kneelers with Celtic Cross finial to apex, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves retaining cast-iron downpipes. Rendered, ruled and lined walls. Lancet window openings with concrete sills, and concealed dressings framing fixed-pane fittings having stained glass margins centred on leaded stained glass "lozenges". Lancet "Trinity Window" (east) with concrete sills, and concealed dressings framing fixed-pane fittings having stained glass margins centred on leaded stained glass panels. Paired lancet window openings to entrance (west) front with roundel (gable), concrete sills, and concealed dressings framing fixed-pane fittings having stained glass margins centred on leaded stained glass "lozenges". Full-height interior with carpeted central aisle between timber pews, paired Gothic-style timber stations between stained glass memorial windows (----), Tudor-vaulted ceiling, and pointed-arch chancel arch framing carpeted stepped dais to sanctuary (east) reordered, ----, with Connemara marble-detailed alabaster altar below stained glass memorial "Trinity Window" (----). Set in landscaped grounds with rendered piers to perimeter having shallow pyramidal capping supporting cast-iron double gates.
