Description
In pasture, located in an area of undulating grassland, bordered to N–NE by an expanse of grass-covered sand dunes, and overlooking the mouth of the Palmerstown River at NW. Raised subcircular area (21m N–S; 21m E–W) defined by a scarp. The scarp at SW–N is well-defined, with a broad external slope (Wth slope 4.7m; ext. H 1.6m at N) which retains a low internal lip (W2-2.4m; int. H 0.3m) at NW–W. At NNE–NE the scarp (H 0.6m) is faced on its outer edge by kerb-like arrangement of upright slabs or boulders, although it is not clear if this is a primary feature. At E–SE the scarp is lower and poorly defined. A linear scarp (H 0.5m) on a NNW–SSE axis extends through the interior to E of centre, marking a change in level marked between a raised area to W and a lower area in the E third of the interior. A section (L 4m) of this bisecting scarp at its S end is faced with large stones. Outside the rath at NW there is a semi-circular depression (9m NE–SW; c. 4.5m NW–SE; D 0.45m) which appears to be the result of relatively recent disturbance. Description
In pasture, straddles the E side of a low rise in a relatively lowlying position on an expanse of undulating grassland which merging with expanse of grass-covered sand dunes at NE, and is flanked to NW by the mouth of the Palmerstown River, and to SE by Killala Bay. Overlooked c. 100m to NNE by a hillock on top of which is a mound barrow (MA015-085----). Nephin Mountain is clearly visible to SSE and the Ox Mountains define the distant skyline on the opposite side of Killala Bay to S–SE. This ringbarrow consists of a circular platform (13.8m N–S; 13.8m E–W; H 0.6m above fosse base) enclosed by a fosse (Wth 2.5m; D 0.35m) with an external bank (Wth 4m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.65m at S). The overall diameter is c. 23m. The central platform appears slightly higher in the centre with a slight slope down to S–SE. There are two boulders embedded in the platform, one (max. dim. c. 0.75m; H 0.4m) in the centre, and another of similar size c. 2m to SE. Description
In pasture, in an area of undulating terrain on a broad headland flanked to NW by the Palmerstown River, to N by Rathfran Bay and to E by Killala Bay. Situated on top of a low knoll with a steep slope on the SE–SW. The knoll forms the ESE terminal of a low ridge on a roughly NW–SE axis, and provides extensive views: Nephin and the Nephin Beg range are visible at SSW–W, Bartragh Island and Killala Bay at E–SE, with the Ox Mountains in the background. Circular, platform-like mound (overall diam. 10m; diam. top 7.9m) defined by a scarp (H 0.45m at N, 0.65m at S). There is a slight circular depression in the top of the platform, somewhat off-centre to NE. A small section of the external slope is eroded at the SW revealing a kerb-like concentration of small-medium sized stones at the base of the mound. Two large boulders, which are embedded in the top of the scarp at S, may be the result of field clearance. A berm-like plinth projects 2m from the base of the mound on the W side and 3m on the E side, giving the impression when viewing the E–W profile that the mound sits on a low platform scarped into the knoll slope. However, this berm-like feature does not appear to extend to the N and S sides of the mound, and may simply be the result of modern farm activity. There are a ringbarrow (MA015-035----) c. 100m to SSW and a mound (MA015-086----) c. 120m to N. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 13 December 2018
