  Description

  In pasture, on the E edge of Shrule village, located in an area of lowlying grassland bordered to SE by the Black River. Shrule Abbey is a National Monument (no. 95) in state ownership. Little remains of the abbey. It is indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a rectangular shaded area (c. 25m E-W; c. 35-40m N-S), marked 'Site of Abbey', and on the 1929 edition as a hachured oval area (c. 16m N−S; c. 14m E−W), marked ‘Abbey (site of)’. The visible remains consist of a roughly rectangular, sod-covered stony rise (11m E-W; 13.4m N-S), with an uneven surface of rises and hollows. Protruding from the NW corner is a heap of masonry rubble. Centrally placed within the rectangular rise there is a smaller, slightly raised rectangular feature (9m N-S; 4.5m E-W; H 0.5m). These features may be the remains of a structure or building, but it is not possible to determine how they may relate to the original abbey. The W side of the rectangular rise merges with a low, sod-covered relict field wall, which extends for c. 35-40m to S into the adjoining field. The N side of the rectangular rise also merges with a field boundary, which extends to ENE for c. 20m. These field boundaries appear to be part of a a relict field system (MA122A016----) visible in the surrounding modern fields to N, S and SW. A church (MA122A004-) is located c. 150m to N, and there is a rath (MA122A003-) c. 250m to N. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 18 June 2018

  Description

  In pasture, on the E edge of Shrule village, located at the site of Shrule abbey (MA122A005001-). The name 'Cloghvanaha' is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map adjacent to the site of the abbey; it is not shown on later map editions. The Ordnance Survey Name Books (1838) record it as follows: “The site of an old abbey -near the E corner of the latter is a large stone Cruckvahina or the Blessed stone.” There is no visible trace of the stone. • Shrule House, farm house, 1810–1815 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey farmhouse, rebuilt 1812; extant 1838, on a symmetrical plan[?] with single-bay two-storey side elevations. Occupied, 1911. Refenestrated. For sale, 2010. Hipped slate roof with clay ridge tiles, paired rendered "wallhead" chimney stacks to rear (north) elevation having stepped capping supporting terracotta pots, and replacement uPVC rainwater goods on timber eaves boards on rendered cut-limestone eaves. Lime rendered walls. Segmental-headed central door opening approached by flight of four dragged cut-limestone steps with drag edged dragged cut-limestone block-and-start surround centred on keystone framing timber panelled double doors having overlight. Square-headed window openings with drag edged dragged cut-limestone sills, and concealed dressings framing replacement six-over-six timber sash windows. Interior including (ground floor): central entrance hall retaining carved timber surrounds to door openings framing timber panelled doors; dining room (south-west) retaining carved timber surround to door opening framing timber panelled door with timber panelled shutters to window opening, Classical-style chimneypiece, and picture railing below run moulded plasterwork cornice to ceiling; drawing room (south-east) retaining carved timber surround to door opening framing timber panelled door with timber panelled shutters to window opening, Gothic-style chimneypiece, and picture railing below run moulded plasterwork cornice to ceiling; and carved timber surrounds to door openings to remainder framing timber panelled doors with timber panelled shutters to window openings. Set back from street in landscaped grounds with dragged cut-limestone cylindrical piers to perimeter having "Cyma Recta"- or "Cyma Reversa"-detailed polygonal capping supporting replacement spear head-detailed mild steel double gates.

• Shrule House, store/warehouse, 1810–1838 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached four-bay three-storey grain store or warehouse with half-attic, extant 1838, on a rectangular plan with four-bay full-height rear (south-east) elevation. Now disused. Pitched slate roof on collared timber construction with clay ridge tiles, and no rainwater goods surviving on cut-limestone eaves. Coursed rubble limestone walls with hammered limestone flush quoins to corners. Segmental-headed carriageway with tooled limestone ashlar voussoirs framing corrugated-iron double doors. Square-headed window openings (upper floors) with no sills, and hammered limestone voussoirs with no fittings surviving. Interior in ruins with remains of timber boarded floors on timber joists on timber beams. Set in unkempt grounds shared with Shrule House.
