• ME025-034 Barrow - mound barrow
  Description

  Situated on the summit of Carn Hill with wide views out in every direction. This is a circular grass-covered mound of earth and stones (diam. 21m; H 1.5m) rising sharply (diam. c. 2m; H c. 0.75m) at the centre. Archaeological testing (06E0761) by F. Bailey and Y. Whitty c. 75m to the S at the closest point produced no related material (excavations.ie 2006:1610). Further archaeological testing (20E0492) by Donald Murphy on the route of a water-pipe c. 300m to the SW at the closest point produced no related material (excavations.ie 2020:223). This is a National Monument in state ownership: No. 10004. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). • ME025-096 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  INTRODUCTION: Situated on a slight rise of rock outcrop in a fairly level landscape, with a small wet area just to the E. A geophysical survey (11R0049) of an extensive area (c. 10 ha) in the townlands of Alexander Reid and Bailis by J. M. Leigh identified five potential archaeological areas. Targeted archaeological testing (11E0240) by F. Walsh (2015) demonstrated that three were relatively modern features (excavations.ie 2011:467) but a post-medieval house (ME025-095001-) and related structures in Area A as well as an enigmatic enclosure in Area D required closer scrutiny. In Area D the testing confirmed the presence of a subrectangular enclosure (dims c. 35m N-S; c. 40m plus E-W), whose E extent could not be recorded because of disturbance. It was defined by a round-bottomed ditch (Wth 2.5m; D 0.8m) filled with sandy clays containing animal bones, but no artefacts were recovered. Subsequently, the stripping of two large areas (dims 100m x 80m: 100m x 60m) that was archaeologically supervised (16E0268) by P. Clancy on either side of a N-S mapped avenue and ditch revealed its extent (dims c. 35m N-S; c. 60m E-W) with an entrance (Wth 2m) on the W side (excavations.ie 2016:762). It seemed to have an annexe (dims c. 30m E-W; c. 10m N-S) defined by a slighter ditch attached to the S side. Articulated human bone representing two individuals that were aligned W-E and located close to each other were recovered but other disarticulated human remains were also present. The area was completely excavated (16E0449) by S. McGlade from February to May 2017 when a multi-phase settlement of the first millennium AD was recorded together with a burial ground of the seventeenth century (excavations.ie 2017:193). The area had been severely truncated by landscaping in the nineteenth century and only the bases of features survived. Final monitoring of the development works revealed that the recorded features extended at most a few metres beyond the excavated area (McGlade and Ruddy 2019, 11-18). Only a preliminary report is available so far (McGlade 2017), which has no specialised reports, radiocarbon dates or a detailed scheme of the four major development phases identified, but the artefacts recovered intimate a date in the seventh and eighth centuries AD. The earliest feature is a circular rath, to which an E annexe (ME025-096001-) in two phases was added during Phase 2. In Phase 3 a W annexe (ME025-096002-) was added. During Phase 4 these three features were combined into a large subrectangular enclosure (ME025-096003-) that has other large enclosures attached including a second or outer W annexe (ME025-096004-). Two circular hut-sites (ME025-096005-; ME025-096006-) were recorded and there were eleven corn-drying kilns (ME025-096007-) across the excavated area but only one instance of metal-working (ME025-096008-). The graveyard (ME025-096009-) and house (ME025-096010-) long post-date the other features. RATH: The rath (int. diam. 28m N-S; 26.4m E-W) is defined by a single rock-cut fosse (Wth 1.02-1.12m; D 0.4-0.53m) that encloses a slight rise of rock outcrop, with the avenue that is mapped on the OS 6-inch maps clipping its E edge. Two phases are recognised in the fosse, the earlier only surviving at SE and W but at the latter it was narrowing to a possible entrance at WNW. Above a basal silt the fill is stony slump material likely to be derived from an internal bank, and at W a secondary line of the fosse ran inside the original, although the re-cut occupied most of the original fosse elsewhere. There was also an entrance (Wth 1.75m) with a metalled surface over the fill of the original ditch at SE which had been partly cut into the inner edge of the ditch. The fosse might have been bridged at this point from the beginning of the rath’s existence but no post-holes for such a structure were recorded. Externally, a path with a gully on one side led W from this earlier entrance. The upper fill of the re-cut fosse has plenty of animal bones indicating a relatively long occupation. The metalled entrance at SE was renewed (Wth 1.9m) with larger cobbles over the fill of the second-phase ditch. This surface included a spud-stone at its outer W edge, suggesting that there may have been a gate on the outer edge of the ditch, and an access path led S from it. A large pit cut the inner edge of the original rath ditch at W and was itself cut by the re-cut ditch. Another pit containing an articulated section of a large animal was cut into the re-cut ditch at S, perhaps marking its final abandonment. • ME025-096001 Enclosure
  Description

  The E annexe represents Phase 2 as it appears to be the earliest feature attached to the rath (ME025-096----). It was formed by ditches attaching to the rath fosse at N (Wth 1.94-2.32m; D 0.47-0.55m; L c. 30m) and S that extended E to the wetland area where there was probably a spring. The S ditch runs E (L c. 20m; Wth 1.1-1.7m; D 0.54-0.6m) and then N (L c. 14m; Wth 0.8m; D 0.28-0.38m) to the wetland area, and together the N and S ditches create an irregular area (dims c. 35m N-S; c. 7-30m E-W). An animal skull and the tip of an iron knife were found at the base of the fill of the S ditch at the junction with the rath fosse, and a complete cow skull with the horn sheaths removed was in a discrete sand layer in the basal fill of the N ditch. The E annexe was subdivided into smaller areas by gullies and ditches, some of the plots being devoted to metal-working or cereal-drying kilns. (McGlade 2017, vol. 1, 16-18) In a third phase a new route for the S arm is created enclosing a larger open area (dims 30m plus E-W), and this ditch ran S of the rath fosse to become the enclosing ditch of the W annexe also when it connects with the original N boundary of the E annexe. A furnace pit (ME025-096008-) was cut into the upper fill of the re-cut E annexe ditch SE of the rath (ibid. 16-22). A fragment of a crucible and two possible anvil stones were recovered in the vicinity. In Phase 4 a new S ditch is provided c. 5m S of the re-routed Phase 3 ditch but while its W end connects with the ditch of the W annexe a return for its E end is not present and it may run into a field system. During Phase 4 the rath became absorbed with the E and W annexes into a large subrectangular enclosure (ME025-096003-) where the principal activity might be represented by the eleven cereal-drying kilns (ME025-096007-) throughout the excavated area. (McGlade 2017, vol. 1, 18-22; 80-1) Two kilns, a hearth, six pits, two post-holes and ten linear features are within the E annexe. One kiln was cut by the rath fosse at NE and had its flue within the rath. A cow’s skull had been placed at this end of the flue. Of the other kiln only the W firing chamber survived, the rest being destroyed by a drain associated with the modern avenue. Three of the internal linear features are E-W gullies and the others could also serve this purpose. Three intercutting N-S ditches largely respect the N boundary of the E annexe. • ME025-096002 Enclosure
  Description

  The W inner annexe (dims c. 22m N-S; c. 9-12m E-W) was defined by a ditch that connects with the N and S ditches of the Phase 3 E annexe. Two phases of the W inner annexe ditch were noted in all the sections, although it was probably re-cut several times. A narrow channel was present along the base of the ditch. An entrance over the top of the original ditch at NW is represented by a layer of stones that is covered by material from the second phase of the ditch. The re-cut ditch at S cut an earlier kiln. At the base of the ditch at S was a large oval rock-cut pit which may have been a well or sump, although it was filled with material probably derived from itself. (McGlade 2017, vol. 1, 22-28) There were two curvilinear ditches inside the W annexe, one of which appears to commence at the original line of the rath ditch at N. There were also two slot-trenches, two stake-holes and a kiln in the W inner annexe. The earlier, inner curvilinear ditch, enclosed a D-shaped area (dims c. 15m N-S; c. 5m E-W) and was contemporary with the re-cutting of the rath ditch. Three animal skulls were recovered from its upper fills. Once closed, it was replaced by the second curvilinear ditch slightly outside the original line. This ditch had two animal skulls in its basal fill. A keyhole kiln cut the upper fill of the inner curvilinear ditch and it had an animal skull in its final fill. An arc of a slot-trench at the S of the annexe is probably a necessary wind-break associated with the kiln. A N-S slot-trench is cut in the fill of the rath ditch at N. In Phase 4 the rath is combined with the E annexe and the W inner annexe to form a subrectangular field with the wet area or pond at its NE angle. • ME025-096003 Enclosure
  Description

  During Phase 4 the rath became absorbed with the E and W annexes into a large subrectangular enclosure (int. dims c. 70m plus E-W; c. 40m N-S) where the principal activity might be represented by many of the eleven cereal-drying kilns (ME025-096007-) throughout the excavated area. The line of the fosse, although re-cut, remained the same at as that of the annexes at N and W but at S a new line parallel with the S side of the annexes but 5m outside it was cut. It was U-shaped and flat-bottomed but a return at E was not found as the ditch shallowed out on the slight rise to the E and it may have been connected with a wider field system. Towards the W end the new ditch truncated two kilns and the E ditch of the earlier phase of the smaller outer W annexe (ME025-096004-), although a ditch defining the E edge of the later W annexe debouches into it. • ME025-096004 Enclosure
  Description

  During Phase 3 a W outer annexe (dims c. 45m N-S; Wth c. 22m) appears to be connected to the inner W annexe but is probably later than it. At N, its defining ditch springs from a curve in the W inner annexe ditch, but the conjunction is disturbed by a slot-trench of a hut-site (ME025-096006-) just to the N. A direct connection between its W edge and the return of its E edge cannot be established but the enclosure is divided in two by an E-W ditch. In Phase 4 this annexe might have been extended further E (dim. c. 40m E-W) and provided with a new ditch connecting with the S edge of the old but extended E and W annexes now combined into a large subrectangular enclosure (ME025-096003-) but a connection between the E and W sides of this enclosure also cannot be established. (McGlade 2017, vol. 1, 27-30) Four kilns are within the area of the W annexes. An isolated feature within the S part of the outer annexe was deeply truncated but appears to have been a figure-of-eight form. One keyhole-shaped kiln cut the fill of both an internal E-W gully within the smaller, earlier W annexe and the fill of the defining ditch of large rectangular enclosure. Another kiln was built in the fill of the E boundary of the earlier W annexe and was cut by the S line of the rectangular enclosure. The last kiln was cut into the fill of the earliest phase of the W annexe ditch and it is possible that a C-shaped structure within the enclosure might have served it as a wind-break although it does not enclose it. • ME025-096005 Hut site
  Description

  In the SE quadrant of the rath was the slot-trench of a small circular hut-site (int. diam. 2.7m) surviving as arcs at NW and SE with a terminal at the N end of the SE section where the entrance probably was. A later burial was in its centre and a NE-SW gully in the interior probably relates to the entrance of the rath at SE. Three truncated kilns were close to the centre of the rath but probably relate to Phase 4, as might the hut-site. • ME025-096006 Hut site
  Description

  Outside the rath fosse at NW a ditch extended NW which, although not connected with it, is probably a contemporary land boundary. Its fill was cut by one of five arcing slot-trenches that combine to create a circular structure just outside the ambit of the rath and its annexes. This is a double-walled (int. diam. c. 7m; ext. diam. c. 8.5m) hut-site, or possibly a hut-site with a drip-channel, with possible entrances at N and E, but as its slot-trenches are cut in the top fill of the boundary ditch it probably relates to Phase 4 by which time the rath was absorbed into its annexes. • ME025-096007 Kiln - corn-drying
  Description

  Eleven kilns of all forms have been recorded in a NE-SW band across the excavation, and these date largely to the two later phases of the monument’s development. Three truncated kilns were close to the centre of the rath but like all the kilns they probably relate to Phase 3 and Phase 4 when the rath was incorporated into a large rectangular enclosure or field (ME025-096003-). One kiln was rock-cut and may have been keyhole-shaped with the firing chamber at SW. Another keyhole-shaped kiln had the drying chamber at NW and was cut by a later burial. A figure-of-eight kiln had the firing chamber at N. Only the last firings remained in the kilns. (McGlade 2017, vol. 1, 32-3) Two kilns were amongst features within the E annexe (ME025-096001-). One kiln was cut by the rath fosse at NE and had its flue within the rath. A cow’s skull had been placed at this end of the flue. Of the other kiln only the W firing chamber survived, the rest being destroyed by a drain associated with the modern avenue. A third kiln of figure-of-eight form (dims 2.22m x 0.95-1.25m; D 0.28m) was just outside the N run of the E annexe ditch. Its parts were clay-lined and the firing chamber at N had intake flues at E and W with the drying chamber at S. (McGlade 2017, vol. 1, 34-6, 95) A keyhole kiln cut the upper fill of the inner curvilinear ditch inside the inner W enclosure (ME025-096002-) and it had an animal skull in its final fill. An arc of a slot-trench at the S of the annexe is probably a necessary wind-break (McGlade 2017, vol. 1, 42-3). Four kilns are within the area of the outer W annexe. An isolated feature was deeply truncated but appears to have been a figure-of-eight form. One keyhole-shaped kiln cut the fill of both an internal E-W gully within the smaller, earlier W annexe and the fill of the defining ditch of the large rectangular enclosure (ME025-096003-). A third kiln was built in the fill of the E boundary of the earlier W annexe and was cut by the S line of the rectangular enclosure. The last kiln was cut into the fill of the earliest phase of the inner W annexe ditch and it is possible that a C-shaped structure within the enclosure might have served it as a wind-break although it does not enclose it. • ME025-096008 Metalworking site
  Description

  A single instance of metal-working was evident in a furnace pit cut into the upper fill of the re-cut E annexe ditch at a point just SE of the rath. Rake-out to the W indicates that the ditch was at least partially open when it was in operation. The shape of the furnace was uncertain as it had been truncated by a post-medieval ditch to the E and by a modern services trench to the W but it was round-bottomed and oriented E-W. A line of stones to the N which included a quernstone fragment was probably a wind-break. A fragment of a crucible and two possible anvil stones were recovered from the vicinity. Small quantities of slag were found in other ditch contexts. • ME025-096009 Burial ground
  Description

  The rath, together with its associated annexes and activities, was probably defunct by the end of the twelfth century and the commencement of Anglo-Norman settlement, but a new and unrelated monument - an enclosed burial ground - was established much later, probably in the seventeenth century, and a house (ME025-096010-) is closely associated with it. A subrectangular enclosure (dims 16-37m N-S; 33m E-W) defined by a continuous fosse in four sections was created partly over the rath but re-using some of the ditches of the annexes which might still have been visible. It has a single causeway entrance (Wth 4m) at the centre of the W side with the expanded terminals of the ditches on either side. A plough coulter was found in the upper fill of the ditch at one point and a complete cow’s skull was in a lower layer of the ditch on the SE side. Thirty eight burials were uncovered, largely in the N part of the enclosure. One grave-cut was partially stone-lined but the remainder were shallow cuts, some of which cut earlier features. A cluster of seventeen graves occupies the highest ground inside the NW angle of the enclosure while another cluster of sixteen at the E angle were seriously disturbed by the mapped N-S avenue and drain. Some pits containing disarticulated remains are probably from the time when the avenue was established, and some of the grave-cuts impinge on each other. An osteological report is not yet available but women, men, juveniles and infants were present, and a silver ring with a turquoise stone setting suggests a post-medieval context for the burials. (McGlade 2017, vol. 1, 57-61, 104-08) A Lady Dowdall of Athlumney castle (ME025-032002-) had endowed a Roman Catholic chapel at Alexander Reid or Bailis that functioned probably until sometime after 1691 when a new owner named Ecklin closed it (Cogan 1867, vol. 2, 242). It may have been associated with the burial ground, although no certain remains of a chapel have been identified in the excavation. The floor was half metalled and a cow’s skull was buried under an unmetalled part close to the likely entrance at NW while a second cow’s skull was built into the wall at S.
