• ME011-045 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  Located at the bottom of a slight W-facing slope, it is described as St Patrick’s Well on the 1836 and 1912 editions of the OS 6-inch map. Between those dates a lane, approaching from the S was built but the remnants of this are now overgrown. The well is a masonry cube (dims 3.1m E-W; 3.05m N-S; H 0.7-1.2m) with an opening (Wth 1m; H 0.8m) on the W (lane) side, which was in this form before the 1830s (OSNB 104, 303). The well is circular (diam. 1.35m) and it was covered by a dome protruding through the masonry cube. The granite stones of the dome form a cross. It had a cure for eye complaints.   Description

  Archaeological testing (23E0738) by D. Gallagher of an area (c. 0.75 ha.) identified a spread of burnt mound material (excavations.ie 2023:181) which was completely excavated by Donald Murphy in October 2023 under the same licence when two fulachta fia were recorded (excavations.ie 2023:566). This feature consists of a thin mound of heat-shattered stones in a grey/black silty clay (dims 7.8m E-W; 4m N-S; T 0.05-0.15m). A smaller mound (diam. 3-3.8m; T 0.05-0.15m) was just to the N.

  Detached five-bay single-storey house, built c.1820, now also in use as a public house. Roughcast rendered walls with render plinth, quoins, and platbands. Pitched slate roof with cast-iron rooflights. Timber sash windows with block-and-start render surrounds. Square-headed door openings with render surrounds. Four-bay stone outbuilding to south. Rubble limestone garden wall and barrel roofed corrugated-iron barn to east.

Roughcast rendered walls with render plinth and platband at eaves course. Pitched pantile roof with rendered chimneystacks. Timber casement and sash windows with concrete sills. Timber door flanked by stone piers with concrete canopy above. Bounded by roughcast rendered walls with stone entrance piers and turn stiles. Extension to rear.

Bounded by rendered wall and gate piers with cast-iron double gates.

  Detached L-plan multiple-bay two-storey former water mill, built c.1800, now in use as an agricultural outbuilding. Whitewashed rubble limestone walls and pitched slate and corrugated-iron roof. Square-headed openings with timber lintels. Loft level accessed via flight of steps at north end of building and lit by slit windows.
