In April 1966 human remains were discovered in a sandpit near Ballivor, county Meath. Six skeletons were discovered in a supine position with the arms by the sides and aligned S-N. The skeletons were reported to have been arranged in a row. They represented four adults and two children. They all appeared to be male. - ME035-005 Ringfort - rath
Description
Located on a low rise with rock outcrop. This is a slightly raised rectangular and grass-covered area (dims 38m E-W; 30m N-S) that slopes down to the E (H c. 1.5m). It is defined by earthen banks (at W: Wth of base 3m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 1.1m) largely reduced to scarps (at E: Wth 1.5m; H 0.7m), but the perimeter has been quarried at N and curves outwards at W and E but is straight at S. There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance, but it is likely to have been a rath. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revision: 5 July 2019
- ME035-006 Castle - motte and bailey
Description
This is situated on a slight SE-facing slope. The mound is a circular flat-topped, grass and scrub-covered mound (diam. of top 13.3m N-S; 12.6m E-W; diam. of base 25.5m NW-SE; H 5.4m) defined by a fosse (Wth of top 7-11.5m; Wth of base 2.5-3m; ext. D 1m) that can be distinguished from the mound. The fosse is slightly truncated by a N-S lane at W. A grass-covered bailey (dims c. 31m NW-SE; c. 20m NE-SW) may have been attached to the E and SE where it is defined by a slight scarp (at SE: Wth 5m; H 0.8m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revision: 21 July 2016 Amended: 24 March 2023
