• ME021-009 Castle - tower house
  Description

  Situated on a knoll on a general E-facing slope. A castle at Donycarny in Colp parish and Duleek barony is not depicted on the Down Survey (1656-8) barony map (http://downsurvey.tcd.ie/), although the terrier or commentary says there is a habitable castle and a farmhouse there (Dalton 1844, 449). Neither the castle nor farmhouse is recorded in the Civil Survey (1654-6), although only 40 acres at Donacarney was forfeited (Simington 1940, 4). This castle was known as ‘Draycott’s Castle’ and is thought to have been burnt in 1641. One wall is depicted on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described as a ‘Ruin’. Only the N wall (L 6m; T 1.75m) and the adjacent part of the E wall survive with a recess towards the W end and the springing of an E-W barrel-vault in the N wall. A fragment of the wall survives above the vault with a small light and the E side of the fragmentary remains of a fireplace with dressed stonework and a chimney flue. The forge (ME021-039----) at the roadside just to the SW could be an original medieval building, and human remains (ME021-040----) were noted c. 25m SW of the castle under the Donacarney road junction in 1964 and again in 2006. • ME021-033001 Enclosure
  Description

  Located on a gentle S-facing slope of Donacarney Hill. The cropmarks of two conjoined enclosures are visible only on Apple Maps, which utilises a survey conducted by Bluesky International during June 2018. This larger feature is circular (int. diam. c. 26m E-W; c. 24m N-S) and is defined by a continuous fosse (Wth c. 2m) but it borders a wider SSW-NNE channel (Wth c. 6m) at W. The enclosure (ME021-033002-) is attached at S, and ditches from an associated field attach to both enclosures from the E. The features were first reported by Anthony Murphy. Archaeological testing and monitoring (18E0380) by J. Stirland c. 50m to the NW at the closest point produced no related archaeological material (excavations.ie 2018:871). • ME021-039 Building
  Description

  Situated on a knoll which is on a general E-facing slope, and it is also at the edge of the road on the N side of a road junction. The smithy at Donacarney abutted the W wall of the castle (ME021-009----) (Dalton 1844, vol. 2, 451), and this building could be a medieval structure as recorded by Kieran Campbell. It incorporated a rectangular light in the E gable, the surrounds of which were dressed with hollow chamfers and it had horizontal glazing bar-holes. The E gable is now reduced in height, but the W wall has a blocked pointed doorway which has the base of its chamfered jambs and part of the pointed arch still present. The quoinstones appear to be hammer-dressed and a spandrel from an ogee-headed light is built into the wall. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 15 September 2021

• ME021-040 Burial
  Description

  Situated at the junction of the N-S R150 Mornington to Bettystown road and the W-E L5614 road from Colp. It is also on a knoll which is on a general slope down to the E. Human remains were noted in a pipe-trench in 1964 and again in September 2006 (Reilly 2006; Murphy 2006) when road resurfacing and re-alignment work by Meath County Council excavated trenches which local archaeologist Kieran Campbell was able to examine. In a N-facing section (L c. 3.5m; H c. 0.5m) the old tarmac and its foundation (T c. 0.15m) covered a light brown stony soil that was flecked with fragments of human bone, and a human skull was at the base of the section.   Description

  Detached six-bay single-storey former school, built c.1873, with central bays flanked by projecting gabled bays with entrance porches. Red brick walls with brick quoins and stone plinth course. Pitched slate roof with timber vents and red brick chimneystacks. Lancet and segmental-arched window openings. Three limestone plaques to front elevation. Now in use as community centre.

  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey over basement house, built c.1860, with a single-bay two-storey addition and a single-storey pedimented extension to west. Hipped slate roof with terracotta ridge tiles, rendered chimneystacks and paired eaves brackets. Rendered walls with render quoins. Timber sash windows with stone sills, having decorative console brackets supporting entablatures to ground floor. Glazed porch addition to entrance elevation retaining timber panelled door with fanlight above. Timber glazed summer house to south, built c.1880, with a veranda and terracotta tile roof.

  Group of three ranges of outbuildings, built c.1860, ranged around a cobbled courtyard. Pitched slate roofs and cast-iron watergoods. Rubble and red brick walls. Ashlar and red brick block-and-start surrounds to some door openings. Stone trough with cast-iron waterpump in courtyard. Circular stone gate piers to site. Remains of walled garden to west.
