• ME045-007 Castle - motte
  Description

  Situated on a rise at the N edge of a plateau with a small SW-NE stream c. 200m to the NW, and the parish church of Donaghmore (ME045-008----) is c. 400m to the NE. This feature is described as a ‘Mound’ on the 1836 and 1908 editions of the OS 6-inch map. It is a subcircular, flat-topped and grass-covered mound (dims of top 17m E-W; 15m N-S; dims of base c. 28m N-S; c. 22m E-W, H 2.5m). There is no visible fosse, but a rectangular area (dims 30m E-W; 28m N-S) immediately to the E has lighter grass growth that could mark the location of a bailey (SMR file). The Brindley memorial, an obelisk, was erected on its summit in 1880 to commemorate Charles Brindley who was the huntsman of the Ward Union Hunt from 1844 until his death in 1879. • ME045-008 Church
  Description

  Located on a gentle E-facing slope, with a small W-E stream that joins the Broadmeadow River c. 750m further E, c. 60m to the N. A church at Donaghmore in Ratoath deanery is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation (1302-06) of Pope Nicholas IV (Cal. doc. Ire., 5, 254). Both the manor and the rectory of Donamor were owned by the Augustinain abbey of St Thomas (DU018-020051-) at its suppression in 1540 (White 1943, 33, 36). Ussher (1622) describes the church and chancel as completely ruined (Erlington 1847-64, 1, lxx1). According to the Dopping (1682-05) and Royal (1693) visitations the church of St Patrick had the walls of the church and chancel still standing but it had been in disrepair since 1641. The graveyard as not enclosed and the parish had already been united with Ratoath (ME044-034003-) (Ellison 1971, 37). The parish church of Donaghmore is within a rectangular graveyard (dims c. 50m E-W; c. 40m N-S) defined by masonry walls with headstones dating largely from c. 1890 to the present. The church is evident as a grass-covered, slightly sunken area (int. dims 11.3m E-W; 5.8m N-S) located towards the NW angle of the graveyard. It is defined by slight earthen banks at N (Wth 3.1m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.7m), S (Wth 2.4m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.1m), and E (Wth 4.2m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.2m), but no dressed stone is evident in the graveyard. The Motte (ME045-007----) is c. 420m to the SW. • ME045-008001 Graveyard
  Description

  Located on a gentle E-facing slope, with a small W-E stream that joins the Broadmeadow River c. 750m further E, c. 60m to the N. The parish church of Donaghmore (ME045-008----) is within a rectangular graveyard (dims c. 50m E-W; c. 40m N-S) defined by masonry walls with headstones dating largely from c. 1890 to the present. • ME045-009 Souterrain
  Description

  Located on a slight rise overlooking the Broad Meadow River which is c. 30m distant to the N and changes direction here from a NW-SE course to a SW-NE one. The souterrain was initially discovered in a sandpit in 1956, and it was reported locally at the time that extended inhumations had also been present. The souterrain was described hurriedly by staff from the National Museum of Ireland before much of it was removed (NMI file). It consisted of an upper E-W passage (Wth at base 1.2m; H 1.4m; L 8.6m) with corbelled walls and a lintelled roof. It was blocked at the W end but a trapdoor (dims 0.9m N-S; 0.8m E-W) with a recess for a closing stone in the floor at its E end gave access to a short W-E passage (Wth at base 1m; H 0.9m; L 1.75m) at a lower level. The E end of this passage met another lintelled passage (Wth 1m; H 1m; total L 4.9m) at a right angle. This extended S (L 0.8m) and N (L 3.1m) before it was blocked by collapse at both ends. Archaeological testing (05E0541) by G. McLoughlin c. 200m to the NE, on the other side of the stream, produced no related material (excavation.ie 2005:1241; 2007:1250).   Description

  Located on a NE-facing slope with a NW-SE portion of the Broad Meadow River c. 300m to the NE. The faint cropmark of a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) defined by a single slight fosse is visible on an oblique aerial photograph (CUCAP: BDP 028) from 1970. It is also visible on OSIAP (1995). • ME045-048 Enclosure
  Description

  Situated at the S edge of a fairly level landscape with the shallow valley of a small SW-NE tributary of the W-E Broad Meadow River just to the S, and a NW-SE section of the stream is c. 80m to the SW. The cropmark of a D-shaped enclosure (int. dims c. 57m E-W; c. 40m N-S) defined by a single continuous fosse feature is visible on Bing aerial images (c. 2013). The fairly straight edge is at N and is almost parallel with an E-W relict field drain that is also visible just to its N and is associated with a field bank that is marked on the 1912 ed. of the OS 6-inch map.
