• ME016-022 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on the SE-facing slope of a small hill. This is a raised, oval and grass-covered area (dims 48m N-S; 32m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth of base 7-7.5m; int. H 0.2-0.7m; ext. H 1.7m) with some bushes separated by a fosse (Wth of top 5m at E to 10m at S; ext. D 0.5-0.9m) from an outer bank (Wth of base 6.6-9m; ext. H 0.6m at S to 1.1m at N). There is an entrance through the inner (Wth of base 1.2m) and outer (Wth of base 1.8m) banks, but no causeway, at ENE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). • ME016-051 Well
  Description

  Located at the bottom of fairly steep NE and NW-facing slopes in a gently undulating landscape. It is described in gothic lettering as ‘Toberboyoga’ derived from Tober Buidheoige - Buíochán (Jaundice) on the 1836 and 1912 editions of the OS 6-inch map. It formerly had a reputation for curing jaundice but the well was defunct by the 1830s (OS Name Books, 104, 262). A slight grass-covered hollow (diam. c. 8m; max. D 1m) open SW-N-E is evident. • ME016-058 Enclosure - large enclosure
  Description

  Located on a general slope down to the N with good views, a large oval, grass-covered area (dims c. 104m) is defined by an earthen bank (Wth c. 5m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.3m). There are traces of a fosse (L 37m; Wth 3m; D 0.3m) ESE-SSE and possible further traces are indicated by a distinct vegetation change along the ENE side. There is a small rise in the bottom of the fosse on the SE side possibly indicating a causeway. The large enclosure (ME016-061----) is c. 160m to the NW and both may have been enclosed woods on the demesne of Drumbaragh. • ME016-060 Slab-lined burial
  Description

  Situated on a rise in an undulating landscape. A lintelled burial (dims 1.7m E-W; 0.5m N-S) lined with thin slabs set upright and covered by six lintels was discovered in removing topsoil for a driveway in 1988. It was excavated by Mary Cahill of the National Museum of Ireland assisted by Niall Brady, and the human remains were examined by Barra Ó Donnabháin. It had a W-E orientation and packing stones and support stones were also recorded. It contained the inhumed remains of a young adult female (age 18-25), and a sample yielded a calibrated C14 date of AD 430-670. • ME016-061 Enclosure - large enclosure
  Description

  Situated in a fairly low-lying landscape, it is not depicted on any map. Aerial photographs taken by Leo Swan and made available courtesy of Katherine Daly show a large subcircular grass-covered enclosure (dims c. 90m NE-SW; c. 80m NW-SE) probably defined by a fosse. It is also visible on aerial images (OSAP 1995) and on Google Earth (19/04/2008) but its visible profile may have become eroded after that date. The large enclosure (ME016-058----) is c. 160m to the SE, and both may have been enclosed woods on the demesne of Drumbaragh. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload; 5 February, 2019

• ME016-071 Hut site
  Description

  Situated on a SW-facing slope in an undulating landscape. Archaeological centre-line testing (04E1055) by D. Bayley (2005) at Testing Area 4 of Contract 5 of the M3 motorway (excavations.ie 2004:1223) identified archaeological material that was fully resolved (E003175) by E. Danaher between November 2006 and January 2007 as Drumbaragh 1 (excavations.ie 2006:1547). A circular hut-site (int. diam. 6.5m N-S; 6m E-W) is defined by an arc of eight post-holes W-N-SSW placed c. 1-2m apart but the SW quadrant is not outlined by postholes. There were three internal post-holes that could provide further roof-support around a subrectangular hearth (dims 0.69m x 0.43m x 0.23m) and some fire-spots. The interior was occupied by eleven pits (dims 0.44m x 0.43m; D 0.21m to 1.16m x 0.6m; D 0.16m) filled with silty clays with varying amounts of charcoal inclusions, some intercutting each other, but two pieces of burnt flint were the only artefacts recovered from them. There were also some pits immediately outside the hut-site but a group of nine pits (dims 0.42m x 0.4m; D 0.06m to dims 1m x 0.8m; D 0.34m) filled with brown clays and varying amounts of charcoal were in a confined area (dims c. 8m x c. 5m) c. 18m further N. Three of these pits had some evidence of burnt and broken stone, but no artefacts were recovered from them and there was no evidence of a burnt mound. Two radiocarbon dates of 2876-2585 cal. BC (Beta 247173) and 2880-2620 cal. BC (Beta 247174) from samples of hazel charcoal that are derived from contexts in the hut-site closely match five ranging 2872-2476 cal. BC (Beta 247170-247177) from hazel charcoal retrieved from the group of pits placing them all in the Late Neolithic, but a single isolated pit (diam. 0.68m; D 0.27m) c. 6m SW of the others returned a determination of 3699-3523 cal.   Description

  Situated on a gentle S-facing slope. Archaeological centre-line testing (04E1055) by D. Bayley (2005) at Testing Area 4 of Contract 5 of the M3 motorway (excavations.ie 2004:1223) identified archaeological material that was fully resolved (E003174) by E. Danaher in November 2006 as Drumbaragh 2 (excavations.ie 2006:1548). A small scoop (diam. 0.3m; D 0.02m) had a dark-grey silty clay fill with a small amount of cremated bone that might have been animal or human but it returned a C14 date of 1261-1006 cal. BC (Beta 247169) and is probably the remains of a pit-burial. Another small pit (diam. 0.47m; D 0.16m) was filled with a grey-brown silty clay with charcoal flecks and small stone inclusions but no bone was present. A large pit (dims 5.3m x 3.4m; D 0.5m) was filled with a brown clayey silt with some animal bone and small stone inclusions, but this pit is probably recent. • ME016-073 Fulacht fia
  Description

  Situated on a gentle S-facing slope, with a small pond just to the N that is the source of a small canalised stream that extends W and then turns S. Archaeological centre-line testing (04E1055) by D. Bayley (2005) at Testing Area 4 of Contract 5 in advance of the M3 motorway (excavations.ie 2004:1223) identified a spread of burnt mound material at the NE edge of the road-take that was partially excavated (E003173) by D. Gallaher between October 2006 and January 2007 as Drumbaragh 3 (excavations.ie 2007:1307). A large mound (dims 19.2m x 11.25m; D 1.34m) of black silty clay with heat-shattered stone and charcoal inclusions was cut NW-SE by the boundary of the road-take and much of the monument survives to the NE. A yellow/brown sand over a layer of peat within the mound represents a period of flooding and abandonment. Alder charcoal from the base of the mound provided a C14 date of 2016-1756 cal. BC (Beta 247166). The mound sealed a rectangular trough (dims 2.2m x 1.1m; D c. 0.1m) with an alder plank in its base. Hazel charcoal from the bottom of the trough yielded a C14 date of 2035-1775 cal. BC (Beta 247168). This was covered by a flood level of brown silty sand but a layer of black silty clay with heat-shattered stone above this provide a C14 date of 1886-1666 cal. BC (Beta 247167) from a sample of ash charcoal. There was a detached spread (dims 3.5m x 3.4m; T 0.02-0.08) of burnt stone outside the main mound to the NW, and burnt mound material filled hollows in the subsoil.   Description

  Detached four-bay single-storey former national school, built c.1850, with pair of gabled porches. Canted window to east gable. Pitched patterned slate roofs with rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron finials. Rendered walls with pair of plaques to gabled porches. Pointed arch and triangular-headed openings with stone sills. Extended to the north.
