• ME013-022 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Located towards the top of the S-facing slope of a W-E spur. This is depicted as a small circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 25m) on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described as a ‘Fort’ and as a larger hachured feature (diam. c. 50-55m) on the 1908 edition. It was described in 1968 (SMR file) as a circular area (diam. 55m N-S; 51m E-W) that slopes down to the N (H 1.4m) which is defined by a slight bank (Wth 6-9m; int. H 0.12-0.5m; ext. H 0.5m at SSW to 1.2m at NNW) and a shallow fosse (at SSW: Wth of top 8m; ext. D 0.5m). The perimeter is incorporated into a field bank and townland boundary with Starinagh SW-NW, and it might have had an entrance at ESE. It can be seen as a subcircular cropmark enclosure (dims c. 60m N-S; c. 50m E-W) defined by a single fosse on OSI images (1995, 2000) and on Google Earth (21/07/2021). • ME013-023 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a SE-facing slope. The faint and uncertain cropmark of a subcircular enclosure (diam. c. 42m N-S) defined by a single fosse is visible on aerial photograph (CUCAP: BGL 20) from the 1970s. It is also visible on Apple Maps, which utilises a survey conducted by Bluesky International during June 2018 and on this image an entrance (Wth c. 8m) is visible at ENE. The fosse is connected with the drains of unmapped field banks that approach from the WSW and NNW, and at S a short drain connects it with a NE-SW field drain from a bank that is depicted on the 1836 and 1907 editions of the OS 6-inch map. The rath is visible again on Google Earth (21/07/2021). • ME013-027 Settlement deserted - medieval
  Description

  Situated on a slight W-E spur with a NE-SW section of the meandering Mattock River in a ravine on the SE side and a W-E tributary of that river on the N. It is also c. 500m N of the Cistercian monastery of Mellifont (LH023-007002-) and was part of its demesne which was leased to Edward Moore after its suppression in 1540. Hurcle was known as Doo in the Middle Ages but the settlement may have been defunct at the Suppression when only a ‘close of pasture called the dooparke of 4 acres’ was in the demesne (White 1943, 213). Earthworks covering about 7 ha (c. 18 acres) consist of earthen banks (Wth c. 3-5m; H 0.2-0.5m) and sunken ditches (Wth c. 4m; D 0.7m) that form some rectangular fields (dims c. 80m x c 30m) extending NW and SE from a fairly open but irregularly-shaped area (dims c. 150m NE-SW; c. 40m NW-SE) that may have been a street. About six house sites (dims 8m x 4m to 13.5m x 4.5m) can be identified at the edges of this open area. At the NE end of the putative street a rectangular building (dims 16m E-W; 8m N-S) in a circular enclosure may be a church. The settlement was surveyed by the Archaeological Survey of Ireland in 1968, probably after its discovery by Leo Swan through his aerial photographic work.   Situated on a hillock in the valley of a meandering NE-SW section of the Mattock River which is c. 100m to the SE at the closest point. The cropmark of a circular enclosure (int. diam. c. 20m) defined by a single fosse (Wth c. 2m) with an entrance (Wth c. 4m) at ESE is visible only on Apple Maps, which utilises a survey conducted by Bluesky International during June 2018.
