  Description

  A castle at Kilskyre (53) in Kilskyre parish and Kells barony is marked as a tower on the Down Survey (1656-8) barony and parish maps adjacent to the church (http://downsurvey.tcd.ie/). According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) the Earl of Fingal and Henry Plunkett of Hartstown in Killallon parish owned 325 acres at Kilskyre, Villenaghtownme, Millstowne and Cullinstowne, which are all sub-denominations of Kilskyre, in 1640 (Simington 1940, 301). It is situated on a slight rise in a fairly level landscape within the ecclesiastical enclosure (ME016-043005-) and c. 30m SW of the parish church (ME016-044----). Only the ivy-covered NW corner of what was once probably a tower house survives to three storeys with no identifiable architectural features. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). • ME016-043 Church
  Description

  Scíre was of the Uí Chaocháin, descended from Fearghas Caochán, who was the brother of Niall Naoighiallach (of the nine hostages). She was a contemporary of St. Colum Cille, and her church at Kilskyre became part of the monastery of Kells (Ó Riain 2011, 551). The death of a successor to Scíre is recorded in 750 (Cuffe 1965, 194; Brangan 1970, 63 4) and the names of some abbots are known (Cogan 1862-70, 1, 147-8). The church of Cill Scíre was plundered by Vikings in 950 and by Diarmaid Mac Murchada in 1170 (O’Connell 1959, 27, 30). The church became the parish church of Kilskyre, and John Taffe, William Silk and Richard Stanyhurst were recorded as the rector in 1385, 1408 and 1442 respectively (Cogan 1862 70, vol. 1, 148). A church at Kilskeer is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation (1302-06) of Pope Nicholas IV (Cal. doc. Ire. 5, 260) and Ussher (1622) describes the church and chancel as somewhat ruinous but Richard Pordan, the rector intended to repair the chancel (Erlington 1827-64, 1, lxxxviii). According to Dopping's Visitaion (1682-5) the Plunketts of Rathmore were the patrons and Richard Duddle was the rector. The church was then out of repair, but it was enclosed (Ellison 1973, 9). The remains of a church in the graveyard are probably medieval and were measured as ’82 feet by 27 feet 3 inches (c. 25m x c. 8.3m) … with a triple belfry at the W end’ by Cogan (1862-70, 1, 149). The nave (int. dims c. 15.35m E-W; c. 7.7m N-S) is defined by the remains of the W wall, an earthen bank (Wth 4.4m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 1m) at N and two fragments of masonry at S, but the belfry does not survive. The chancel (int. dims c. 10m E-W; c. 6m N-S) is defined by fragments of wall at N (int. L 7.2m) and E (int. L c. 5m). There is the grass-covered base of a tower (ext. dims 4.35m E-W; c. 6m N-S) attached to the N end of the W wall of the nave. The graveyard as marked on the 1836 ed. of the OS 6-inch map was rectangular (dims c. 65m E-W; c. 40m N-S) but it has been extended to the W (dim. c. 80m E-W) and is defined by earthen banks at W and N, a masonry wall at E and a scarp at S. The chest tomb of Hugh O’Reilly and his wife Katherine Plunkett (L 2.02m; Wth 0.96m; T 0.08m) that was built by his son in 1686 is at the E end of the church with two armorial crests inset in the wall above it (King 1987, 295-6). A lintel with a small armorial plaque and the date 1631 is in the graveyard, but this may be from the tower house (ME016-042----) that is just to the SW of the church and within the present graveyard. St Scire's well (ME016-043008-) is at the roadside c. 160m SE of the church and was restored in 2008 (French 2012, 93-4). There are large enclosures from the field system (ME016-044----) in the surrounding fields. An archaeo-magnetic survey in the surrounding fields identified elements of an ecclesiastical enclosure in two parallel ditches 20m apart curving around the graveyard just to its N. A small rectangular building (dims c. 10m E-W; c. 6m N-S) was identified c. 50m E of the graveyard is interpreted as a possible church and there was extensive evidence of ridge and furrow cultivation.   Description

  The site of the early church of St. Scíre that became the parish church of Kilskyre (ME016-043----) is within a graveyard which was rectangular (dims c. 65m E-W; c. 40m N-S) as marked on the 1836 ed. of the OS 6-inch map but it has been extended to the W (dim. c. 80m E-W) and is defined by an earthen bank at W and N, a masonry wall at E, and a scarp at S. The table tomb of Hugh O’Reilly and his wife Katherine Plunkett (ME016-043002-) and two armorial plaques (ME016-043003-; ME016-043004-) are in the graveyard. The tower house (ME016-042----) is also within the present graveyard. There are large enclosures from a field system (ME016-044----) in the surrounding fields.   Description

  From King (1987, 295-6): Tomb chest. 1686. This monument for Hugh Reilly and his wife Catherine Plunkett is set against the north wall in the east end of the ruined church in Kilskeer graveyard. It consists of a partially damaged tomb chest and wall plaques. The tomb cover is undecorated apart from the following incised inscription in Roman Capitals (missing letter are given in lower case): this monVMENT WAS ERE / cted for HUGH REILY OF / …EN IN THE COVNTY / of meaTH ESQ AND CATHRI/ N aliAS PLUNKET HIS WEI / f and THERE CHILDREN WHO / …DETH TO BE HEARE INTE / rred WITH THERE POSTERETY / the SAIDE MONVMENT BEING / finiSHED THE YEARE OF OUR loRD GOD 1686. The end panel is decorated with mortality symbols while the side panel has three figures in recessed niches. On the left side is a man with knees and arms bent, showing out-turned hands. The centre niche has a woman with out-turned feet and her hands flat on her chest, and on the right is a virtually naked figure with upraised hands. Above the tomb there are two wall plaques with irregularly displayed interpretations of the arms of the Plunkett and O’Reilly families. Dimensions of chest cover: L 2.02m; Wth 0.96m; T 0.08m.   Description

  In the graveyard of Kilskeer church (ME016-043----) is a piece of a mantelpiece (H 0.78m; Wth 0.33-0.38m; T 0.15m) re-used as a grave-marker. It has a crest with a chevron and a scallop shell, and also has the letters 'R' and 'P' on either side of the crest, and the date 1691. • ME016-043008 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  Situated on a fairly level landscape and on the NW side of the road from Kilskyre to Clonmellon, Co. Westmeath. This well was not depicted on the 1836 edition of the OS 6-inch map, even though it was noted by John O’Donovan (Herity 2001, 17) but it seems to have been defunct even then. The well is marked but not named on the 1912 edition of the map, and it was restored, or rediscovered and reconstituted, in 2008 by the local Historical Society. The well is a rectangular trough (dims 0.8m x 0.6m; max. H 0.85m) with water (D 0.4m). • ME016-044 Field system
  Description

  Situated in a gently undulating low-lying landscape. An area of about 6 hectares (c. 15 acres) S of Kilskeer castle (ME016-042----) and church (ME016-043001-) contains a number of relict field boundaries which form large circular enclosures (diam. c. 200m) centering on low rises. The enclosures are defined by scarps (H c. 1m) or hollow ways or silted drains (Wth 4-5m; D 0.5m). No house sites were identified in the area. A magnetometer survey (06R022) revealed that the area around the graveyard was masked by cultivation ridges on various alignments but two parallel WNW-ESE banks 20m apart (L 60m) were noted N of the graveyard. These features may have formed part of an enclosure that was echoed by features S of the graveyard. The N part of one of the large circular enclosures was also confirmed.   Description

  Situated on a cairn (diam. c. 2m; H c. 0.5m) around a whitethorn tree in the centre of a T-junction of the R154 SE-NW Athboy to Kilskeer road with a minor road from the ENE at White Cross Road, and c. 600m SE of Kilskeer. It is marked only on the 1908-1911 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. This is a small stone cross with a diamond-shaped cross-section (dims 0.1m x 0.1m; H 0.33m; span 0.3m), which has raised leaf-shaped motifs on the arms and stem that are flush with the edges of the cross at front and back.   Description

  Situated at the W side of the SE-NW R154 road from Athboy to Kilskeer, c. 600m SE of the village of Kilskeer and just NW of White Cross Roads. A limestone latin cross (H c. 1m; span c. 0.6m; T c. 0.5m) is set on an octagonal stand, which is sitting on a masonry pier (dims c. 2m N-S x c. 1m E-W; H c. 2m). An inscription in black lettering on white polished marble on the E face of the pier reads: Of your charity / pray for the / soul of / Richard Conwell / who died Nov. 7 1857 / May he rest / in peace / Amen.   Description

  Situated at the E side of the SE-NW R154 road from Athboy to Kilskeer, c. 1 km SE of the village of Kilskeer. It is marked only on the 1908-1911 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. It was described in 1940 as ‘two square blocks 2 feet 6 inches square, 9 inches thick (c. 0.75m; H c. 0.22m), of which the topmost has a rectangular socket. On top is a bit of window-tracery, supported at the back by another bit of the same jamb.
