• ME005-017 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Located on a rise towards the bottom of a N-facing slope. It is represented on the 1836 and 1908 editions of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as ‘Lismore’. This is a raised, slightly dished, subcircular and grass-covered area (dims 35m E-W; 31m N-S) planted with deciduous trees. It is defined an earthen bank (at WSW: Wth of base 10m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 3m) that is largely reduced to a scarp (at ENE: Wth 5m; H 3.1m) and an outer fosse (Wth of top 8-9.5m; ext. D 0.5m at E to 1.3m at WSW) and an outer bank (at E: Wth of base 2m; ext. H 0.5m: at WSW: Wth of base 9m; ext. H 1.2m), which is very slight or absent E-SW. There is a ramp entrance (Wth of base 2m) at SE.   Description

  Situated on the summit of a small N-S ridge, with a canalised N-S stream around the base of the hill c. 80-100m to the W. This is a raised subcircular and grass-covered platform (diam. of base 56m NW-SE; diam. of top 40m E-W; 37m N-S) defined by a scarp (at SE: Wth 5m; H 2.4m; at NW: Wth 8.5m; H 3.2m). There is no visible bank or fosse but there is a ramp entrance (Wth of base 3.3m) at ESE.   Description

  Located on a knoll with higher ground all around within c. 200m except to the W, and there is a small NE-SW stream is c. 70m to the S. This rath is described as ‘Lisatanvally’ on the 1836 and 1908 editions of the OS 6-inch map. It is a raised circular and grass-covered area (diam. 38.3m NNE-SSW; 37.5m E-W) defined by a largely overgrown earthen bank (at NNE: Wth of base 10m; int. H 1.1m; ext. H 3.4m; at SSW: Wth of base 10m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 3.2m), and an outer fosse (at NNE: Wth of top 6.5m; Wth of base 2m; ext. D 0.5m) with an outer bank (at NNE: Wth of base 7m;l ext. H 2.5m) WNW-ENE. There is a large entrance (Wth of base 2.9m) at E. An ENE-WSW field bank, now removed outside the monument, crosses the fosse at NE and NW and provides a stone-faced base to the inner bank NW-NE. Rath (ME005-034----) is c. 170m to the ESE.   Description

  Situated at the crest of a NW-facing slope overlooking rath (ME005-033----), which is c. 170m to the WNW. This rath is described as ‘Lisnaguinnell’ on the 1836 and 1908 editions of the OS 6-inch map. It is a circular grass and scrub-covered area (diam. 38.5n NW-SE; 37m NE-SW) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth of base 7-8.5m; int. H 0.9-1.2m; ext. H 2.7-3m) separated by a fosse (Wth of top 8-9m; ext. D 0.7-1.2m) from an outer bank (Wth of base 3.2-6m; ext. H 0.5-0.7m) that is absent ESE-S. The entrance through the inner bank (Wth of base 2.3m) and causeway (Wth of top 3m; H 0.5m) are at E. The base of a relict stone wall (Wth 1.2m; H 0.4m) separates off the NW quadrant, and there is a house site (int. dims 5.5m NW-SE; 4.1m NE-SW) backing onto the inner face of the inner bank at NE and defined elsewhere by stones or a low earthen bank. A rectangular grass-covered area (int. dims 5.5m NW-SE; 4.1m NE-SW), obscured by furze, is defined by the rath bank at NE and elsewhere by stones or a low earthen bank and is.   Description

  Located at the S end of a low hillock on the floor of a N-S valley with a canalised N-S stream c. 50m to the E. This rath is described as ‘Lisataggart’ from Lios an Saggart – the Priest’s Lios – on the OS 6-inch maps. It is a raised oval area (dims 26m N-S; 20m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth of base 7-8m; int. H 0.3-0.7m; ext. H 2-2.8m) NNW-E-SSW and a scarp elsewhere. There is no visible fosse and an original entrance is not identified. It has become overgrown since 1969 (Digitalmap).
