• ME022-004 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Located towards the top of the S-facing slope of an E-W ridge. This is an oval grass-covered area (dims 49m ENE-WSW; 40m NNW-SSE) that slopes down (H c. 2m) to the SW. It is defined by an earthen bank (at E: Wth 6.3m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1m) that is reduced to a scarp (ext. H 1-2m) WNW-N and an outer fosse (at E: Wth of top 6.5m; Wth of base 1.7m; ext. D 1m) often reduced to a berm (at S: Wth 3.5m). There are traces of an outer bank E-SW that might be incorporated in a NW-SE field bank N-E. The original entrance through both banks is at WSW. Just NE of the centre is a rectangular house site (dims 12m N-S; 5m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2.4m; H 0.3m) at W and S and a scarp down to the interior at N and E with an entrance at W.   Description

  Situated on the N-facing slope of a rise in an undulating landscape. This is a D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 40m E-W; 34m N-S) defined by an earthen bank S-NW, with the remains of a fosse SE-W, and by scarp NW-NE. There is no evidence of a boundary on the E side, but there is a slight N-S scarp (Wth 0.3m; H 0.5m) down to the E across the centre that is probably the line of an old field bank. The original entrance is not identified. Rath (ME023-002----) is c. 60m to the S. • ME023-002 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Located on the S edge of a ridge in an undulating landscape. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 30m E-W; c. 28m N-S) that slopes down to the E (H 0.9m). It is defined by an earthen bank (Wth of base 5-6m; int. H 0.2-0.5m; ext. H 0.8-1m) that is incorporated into a field bank NW-NE. This is separated by a complete outer, rounded fosse (Wth of top 5-6m; ext. D 0.3-0.4m) from the remnants of an outer bank (Wth of base 4.5m; ext. H 0.4m) that are visible S-NW. The perimeter is truncated slightly by a N-S relict field bank (Wth of base 4m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.9m) and outer drain (Wth of top 6m; ext. D 0.3m) at E. An original entrance is not identified. Rath (ME023-001----) is c. 60m to the N and enclosure (ME023-003----) is c. 150m to the SW. • ME023-003 Enclosure
  Description

  This is a sub-rectangular or D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 57m E-W; 35-40m N-S) defined by a flat-bottomed fosse (at W: Wth of top 4.5m; Wth of base 2.3m; int. D 1.4m; ext. D 0.5m; at S: Wth of top 7m; Wth of base 3m; int. D 1.5m; ext. D 0.5m) and traces of an outer counterscarp bank. There are entrances visible as ramps at the centre of the E side (Wth 5m) and at the W end of the N side (Wth 7m). The interior is occupied by the remains of six houses (dims c. 5m x c. 5m to c. 7-11m x c.5m) defined by wall footings or visible as low platforms. The houses are probably closely contemporary with each other and the enclosure as they appear to be laid out in relation to each other and the edges of the enclosure. Rath (ME023-002----) is c. 150m to the NE and rath (ME023-004----) is c. 150m to the SSW.   Description

  Situated at the N end of a small ridge in an undulating, low-lying landscape with a small lake in a hollow c. 60m to the W. This is a subcircular grass-covered area (dims 26.5m N-S; 22m E-W) defined by a fosse (at SW: Wth of top 6.7m; Wth of base 2m; int. D 0.5m; ext. D 0.6m) S-W and a scarp (at NE: Wth 5.7m; H 2.3m) with some bushes elsewhere.
