• MO028-041 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Located towards the NW end of a NW-SE drumlin ridge. This is a subcircular or D-shaped and grass-covered raised area (dims 34m NW-SE; 28m NE-SW) defined by scarps (at W: Wth 3.2m; H 2.7m; at NW: Wth 4.2m; H 1m) with an earthen bank (at SE: Wth 3.5m; int. H 1m; ext. H 1.2m) incorporated into a field bank on the perimeter E-S. The perimeter is cut by a NW-SE field bank at NE, but there is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance. The perimeter is now circumscribed by a farm track SE-W-NW and the interior is overgrown (Bing 2013). • MO028-043 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated at the N end of a NW-SE drumlin ridge. This rath is depicted on the NW side of a NNE-SSW road on McCrea’s map of County Monaghan (1793), and it is shown with dotted lines on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map on the same side of the road. By the time the 1907 edition was made the road looped around it just to the W as it does now. This is a subcircular grass-covered area (dims c. 45m E-W; c. 40m N-S) defined by a scarp E-S-W (at S: Wth 5.4m; H 1.3m) that melds into the slope elsewhere. It is visible on the OSI aerial images 2005 (OSAP). Rath (MO028-046----) is c. 200m to the SE. • MO028-046 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Located at the SE end of a NW-SE drumlin ridge. This rath is depicted on McCrea’s map of County Monaghan (1793) and on subsequent OS 6-inch maps. It is a subcircular grass and scrub-covered area (dims 35m NW-SE; 29m NE-SW) that slopes down slightly to the SE (H 1.2m) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 5.2-7.8m; int. H 0.8m at SE to 2m at NW; ext. H 2.7-2.8m) with an outer fosse (at NW: Wth of top 6.4m; Wth of base 2m; ext. D 1.5m) that declines in magnitude to the SE. There is a wide gap (Wth of base 4.7m) at SE which has been widened but it might be the original entrance.
