• MO031-092 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a slight E-W ridge with hollows to the N and S. This is a circular, slightly domed and grass-covered area with some apple trees (diam. 37m E-W; 34m N-S) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth 5-5.6m; int. H 0.4-0.8m; ext. H 1-1.2m), with slight traces of a fosse WSW-NW. The entrance (Wth of base 2m) is at SSE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986).   Description

  Situated at the summit of a small NW-SE drumlin ridge. It is depicted as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 25m) described as ‘Corkeeran fort’ only on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map. The perimeter could be incorporated into a curve in a field bank SE-SW visible as a scarp (H c. 1m) but no other feature was visible in 1984. It can be seen as a circular cropmark defined by a single bank feature on the OSI series of aerial images (1995).   Description

  Situated on a slight rise in a low-lying landscape. Depicted as an embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 35m) described as a fort on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map and as an arc of hachures on the 1907 edition. The arc of an earthen bank (at S: Wth 5.2m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 3m) survives E-S-WNW (Chord 37.2m) incorporated into an overgrown field bank. A circular limekiln, or perhaps a sweat-house (int. diam. 1.4m; surviving H 0.8m) is built into the outside of the perimeter at SW.
