• MO006-003 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated at the crest of an E-facing slope of a N-S drumlin ridge, with higher ground c. 250m to the NW and c. 150m to the SW. It is depicted as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) described as a ‘fort’ in gothic lettering on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map, and as a hachured enclosure on the 1907 edition. It was described in 1967 as an oval grass-covered area (dims 39m NE-SW; 26m NW-SE) defined by a scarp (at SW: Wth 3.7m; H 0.7m: at NW: Wth 6m; H 1.8m), with a fosse (Wth of top 7m; Wth of base 1.7m; ext. D 0.3m) across the ridge S-W. The original entrance was not identified. It appears to have been removed or eroded away before 1995 (OSAP). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986).   Description

  Situated in boggy ground on the shore at the NW angle of the triangular Tully Lough (dims c. 300m NNE-SSW; c. 140m WNW-ESE), although the lake is represented as larger (dims c. 375m NNE-SSW; c. 200m WNW-ESE) on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map. It is visible as a slightly raised circular and grass-covered mound of earth (diam. 20m E-W; 18m N-S) with ash and charcoal in evidence. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). • MO006-038 Burnt pit
  Description

  Located on an E-facing slope in an undulating landscape with drumlins. Archaeological testing (17E0310) on the line of road improvements to the N2 Monaghan to Emyvale road identified two pits (diam. 0.8m: diam. 0.5m) 1m apart, which were fully excavated under another licence (17E0603) when it transpired that the smaller feature was a natural hollow but the other pit (diam. 0.8m; D 0.12m) contained heat-shattered stone and hazel charcoal, from what is interpreted as a roasting pit.
