• OF009-017 Standing stone
  Description

  On a natural low hillock with good views in all directions. Large recumbent irregular shaped sandstone boulder (2.1m E-W x 1.3m N-S; T 0.4m avg.) resting on top of smaller stones which are embedded into the ground. Skeletal remains found underneath standing stone on its W side in 1935 (Duignan 1935). According to Stanley (1870-71, 27-9) the stone was erect (H 6ft) with evidence of packing stones at its base. Described by Stanley as 'There is a 'clug stucogh' on Mr. Belton's land in Ballynamona, near Durrow. It is a massive conglomerate, stands about six feet high, and has other sandstones gathered to its base to keep it steady (Stanley 1870-71, 28). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011

• OF009-042 Burial ground
  Description

  Archaeological survey and rescue excavation at Ballynamona under licence No. 21E0836 by Archaeological Consultancy Services Unit was carried out at the request of the National Monuments Service who conducted a site inspection on Friday 17th September 2021 following a report from the State Pathology Unit that human remains had been recovered during the excavations of two gravel pits. Archaeological excavation began on 9th December 2021 and concluded on 20th December 2021. The section faces of both gravel pits were cleaned and all archaeological features identified were recorded. A total of 26 features were identified. These consisted of 21 burials, 4 possible burials and 1 charnel pit. A large quantity of human remains were recovered from the site. Many of these were loose within the section faces of the pits and were lifted. However, many were also considered to be stable within the soil matrix and were preserved in-situ (Murphy and Gibney 2022, 1).
