• OF023-005 Habitation site
  Description

  Mesolithic habitation site discovered on the bed of Lough Boora in 1977 and excavated by the National Museum under the direction of Dr. Michael Ryan (Ryan 1978). The site appears to have been located on a fossil lake shore formerly sealed by peat and subsequently inundated by the modern lake. The excavation revealed a number of hearths which were rich in charcoal, which included the burnt bones of mammal, bird and fish. Other evidence included the waste debris associated with the manufacture of bone tools. Over 400 objects were recovered including three polished stone axe heads, almost 200 microliths along with blades and scrapers of chert.   Description

  Situated on a low natural rise in undulating countryside. Raised circular area (diam 28m E-W; ext. H 0.5m) enclosed by an earthen bank reduced in most places to a scarp with slight traces of an external fosse (Wth 1m) at W only.   Description

  Poorly preserved raised oval shaped area (34m N-S; 46m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 1.3m) and partial fosse (ext. D 0.5m; Wth 2m) surviving from N to E.   Description

  This site was levelled 10 - 15 years ago according to the present landowner. Barely discernible outline of a circular area (diam 50m E-W) with nearby ringfort (OF023-010) to the E. Described by Wheeler (1958) as a platform ringfort consisting of a circular raised area (diam 50m; 40m E-W; ext. H 2m) planted with beech trees defined by a scarp with no evidence of an external fosse or entrance feature.   Description

  Roughly oval shaped area (diam 36m N-S ) enclosed by two earthen banks with intervening and external fosse. Inner bank (Wth 6m at base; int. H 1m; ext. H 2m), external bank (Wth 7m at base; int. H 1.8m; ext. H 2m). Intervening fosse (Wth 1.6m) and external fosse (Wth 2.2m; ext. D 1.4m). Possible entrance gap (Wth 3m) at SE.   Description

  Not visible at ground level. There are substantial remains of out-buildings and part of 19th-century gothick style bawn near site of castle. The castle was demolished in the 1930's. Chief seat of the Molloy's (Cooke 1875, 234-5). Depicted in the Kings County Chronicles as a tall rectangular tower with crenellated wall walk and gabled roof.   Description

  Detached five-bay single-storey farmhouse, built c.1800, with direct-entry plan. Northern two bays are addition. Pitched oaten straw roof to southern three bays and tiled to northern two bays. Low rendered chimneystacks. Roughcast rendered stone walls. Timber sash windows. Timber battened door and half-door. Sited in farmyard with variety of corrugated-iron and concrete outbuildings.

  Description

  Detached four-bay single-storey thatched farmhouse with further one-bay integral outbuilding under same roof, built c.1800, with direct-entry plan. Pitched oaten straw roof, having low rendered chimneystacks. Stone walls, roughcast rendered to front and limewashed and having two stone buttresses to rear. Small openings with timber sash windows. No rear windows. Timber battened door and half-door. Yard is one of pair of farmyards and is located at end of avenue.
