Description
Situated on W facing slope on a slight rise of ground in undulating countryside. Roughly circular area (diam 39m) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 3m) and external fosse (Wth 3m) with entrance gap (Wth. 10m) at NW. Fosse is destroyed from S through W to NW. Situated on a slight rise of ground in undulating countryside. Roughly oval shaped area (diam 35m E-W; 39m N-S) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.5m) and external fosse (Wth 3m) visible from N through E to S elsewhere it is destroyed with entrance gap (Wth 4m) at E. Situated on level ground in undulating countryside. A roadway runs across the centre of the site with only the S portion surviving. The remains consist of a semicircular shaped area (diam 44m max.) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 2m) and slight remains of an external fosse (Wth 1.5m) with no entrance feature visible. Description
In 1621 the commissioners appointed by the English Crown for the plantation of Kings County granted to Mulrony Duff O'Carroll 'The castle, town and lands of Clonegennegh alais Clonagennagh…The above lands erected into the manor of Clonageneth, with power to empark 500a for demesne lands and to hold courts-leet and baron' (Cal. pat. rolls Ire., Jas I, xviii, 481). Clonagannagh Castle is depicted on the Down Survey (1654-7) map (NLI, MS 716). House known locally as 'the stump house' that is located to the east of Alley's Bridge on the south side of the road could be built on the site of Clonagannagh Castle (Stout 1985).
