• OF002-007001 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  Located on high ground with good extensive views in undulating countryside. Wall footings of a rectangular building marked on the OS 6-inch map as Faheeran Castle (ext. dims. 9.6m N-S; 14.2m E-W; wall T 0.95m) that is orientated on an E-W axis standing in the E quadrant of a D-shaped enclosure or bawn (OF002-007002-) defined by an earthen bank which has been degraded to a scarp at the W and S and a deep wide outer fosse which has been filled in from N to E. Causewayed entrance at SW gives access to the interior of the bawn. A series of low linear earthworks forming an irregular-shaped pattern may represent possible settlement to the SW of the site, alternatively these earthworks may be the result of land reclamation. It is possible that the D-shaped enclosure pre-dates Faheeran Castle and was later re-used as the bawn of the castle. Alternatively this D-shaped enclosure may be contemporary with the castle representing the earthen defences of the bawn of Faheeran Castle. • OF002-007002 Bawn
  Description

  Located on ridge of ground with good extensive views in undulating countryside. Wall footings of a rectangular building known as Faheeran Castle (OF002-007001-) which is enclosed within a D-shaped enclosure (diam. 35m N-S; 50m E-W) defined by an earthen bank which has been degraded to a scarp at the W and S and a deep wide outer fosse (Wth 3.6m, ext. D 1m, int. D 2m) that has been filled in from N to E. The straight side of the D-shaped enclosure is located along the W side, where a causewayed entrance (Wth 5m) at SW gives access to the interior of the courtyard of the castle. There is possible settlement evidence in the form of low irregular series of earthworks to the SW of the castle, although these low earthworks may be related to land reclamation. It is possible that the D-shaped enclosure pre-dates the castle and was reused as a bailey for the castle in the medieval period. Alternatively the enclosure may be contemporary with the castle, representing the original enclosing element of the bawn or defended courtyard of Faheeran Castle. • Springfield House, house, 1780–1810 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey with attic house, built c.1800, with return to rear, entrance porch and flanking castellated bays, c.1840. Single-storey extensions to rear elevation. Pitched tiled roof with rendered chimneystacks and bracketed limestone eaves course with decorative applied roundels. Ruled and lined rendered walls, castellated to flanking bays. Square-headed window openings with replacement uPVC windows, stucco architrave surrounds and limestone sills. Round-headed door opening to entrance porch with petal fanlight, granite columns and timber panelled door. Original entrance gates survive disused to west of house and consist of wrought-iron gates flanked by limestone piers with fluted cornice, flanked by quadrant walls with limestone castellation terminating in limestone piers.
