• OF025-017001 Religious house - Franciscan friars
  Description

  Associated with St. Sinchell who founded a monastery here in the sixth century. The church and convent marked on the OS 6-inch map are the same buildings which represent the remains of a large Franciscan Abbey formerly the site of an Augustinian Priory (OF025-017003-) which is today incorporated into a guest house (OF025-030----) and a C of I church. The site has undergone many alterations as can be seen from the different stonework throughout the site which suggests that the abbey may originally have been a 12th-century Augustinian priory. The Abbey now consists of a main Church which is today used by the Church of Ireland as a place of worship which has been shortened on its E end. Evidence of a large E window probably of the triple light lancet type at the E end of the Abbey is now incorporated into the graveyard wall. From a drawing in 1896 the church had a central belfry tower and a S transept off the W end of the S wall of which today there are no remains. There is a barrel vaulted chapter house at the E end of the N wall of the Abbey with later doorway and mural stairways which gives access to the floor above chapter house with several musket loops visible on the E wall and possible garderobe chute in NE angle. The chapter house (int. dims. 12.2m E-W; 5.15m N-S; wall T 1.2m) has a cobblestone floor with 3 engaged columns of varying profiles on the N and S walls with a large partially destroyed round arched window in the E wall. The barrel vault along with the inner half of the N wall are a later insertion of probable 15th-century date. The E window of the chapter house has late 12th/13th-century jambs with a later medieval arch which was probably altered during the insertion of the barrel vault. Above the W wall of the sacristy can still be seen the string course of the ambulatory which enclosed the cloister area which was located to the N of the main church. Domestic buildings located around this cloister area are now the site of outhouses with a central well which is now blocked up. The guest house known as the Abbey (OF025-030----) is a late medieval house with several late medieval ogee headed windows visible. Architectural fragments now housed inside the chapter house display a wide range in date from the 12th-century to the late medieval period. Early Christian cross-slab also located inside the chapter house. To the SW are the remains of an earthwork marked on the OS 6-inch map as 'Entrenchment' which may represent a medieval fortification of the site (1550 Survey) or perhaps the remains of an Early Christian enclosure (OF025-017011-). The earthwork consists of two earthen banks with intervening wide flat bottomed fosse similar to the earthworks enclosing the Abbey at Seir Kieran (OF039-003----). Graveyard (OF025-017004-) to the S contains 17th/19th-century headstones. This evidence indicates continued ecclesiastical settlement from the Early Christian period to the present. (Comerford 1883, 190-2; Cooke 1875, 256; Fitzgerald 1918-22, 23-32; O' Flanagan 1933, vol. 1, 23; Hadcock 1964, 128; Sheehy 1969 vol. 14, 2-3) In 1991 four trial trenches in an area to the N of the Fair Green on the N side of the main road (NGR 236764/218313) through the village of Killeigh were opened by Helen Keogh for ADS Ltd, but nothing of archaeological interest was noted in any of them, any disturbance noted being of modern date. In 1995 pre-development testing at the site of a proposed dwelling house extension was undertaken in January 1995 by Dominic Delany under licence no. 95E15. The site is located on the north side of the village fairgreen (NGR 236721/218328) about 150m north-east of the present Protestant church, which incorporates fragmentary remains of a 12th-century Augustinian abbey. No archaeological deposits or features were noted. Archaeological testing was carried out in 1999 under licence no. 99E0348 by Dominic Delany. Test excavation was undertaken before an application for open planning permission for four detached dwellings. Two test-trenches, 65-90m long and 1.8m wide, were mechanically excavated at locations corresponding to the general footprint of the proposed development. A 5-7m-wide spread of compacted, silty sand was encountered at the south-east ends of the two trenches. This feature is orientated north-east/south-west and may represent levelled bank material and/or the upper fill of a large ditch. It is significant that this feature is aligned with the earthwork and the curving field boundary in the field to the west of the site. This strongly suggests that it is part of the enclosing element associated with the ecclesiastical remains at Killeigh. Two post-medieval features-a large, irregular spread of grey/brown, silty sand and an oval pit-were also encountered in Trench 2. The pit (2.5m north-south by 0.95m) contained a fill of light grey/brown, silty sand, and the finds included green glass wine bottle fragments, clay pipe stem fragments and several sherds of late/post-medieval pottery. A single sherd of Bellarmine pottery was recovered from the irregular spread. In 2000 a second phase of testing was carried out at this site. Nine trenches were excavated: two at each of three proposed house sites, and three on the line of the proposed service run. Following extensive testing it was established that the only definite archaeological features within the tested area are those that were discovered during the initial excavation. These comprise a portion of an ecclesiastical enclosure, which skirts the south-east end of the site, and two post-medieval features, which were discovered on the route of the proposed service road. Several possible archaeological features were tested. The results were inconclusive because no datable finds were recovered, but most appeared to be of post-medieval or modern date. The revised site layout plan provides for the exclusion of the enclosure element from the boundaries of the house sites, and the service road will be raised in order to minimise compaction of subsurface archaeological material. Archaeological testing was carried out in 2002 under licence no. 02E1006 as part of the planning schedule for a three-house development near the Early Christian enclosure of Killeigh (SMR 25:17). Nine trenches were excavated by mechanical digger. No features or finds of archaeological significance were revealed. John Purcell, Ballinvalley, Killeigh, Co. Offaly.   Description

  Four late 17th century graveslabs located in the graveyard to the S of the Franciscan Friary (JKAS vol. 9, 1918-22, 23-32). The Tarleton family are buried in the SE corner of the graveyard in Killeigh and their memorial which has now sunk beneath the surface of the graveyard was recorded in 1919-20 and the inscription read 'Here under lyeth the body of Gilbert Tarleton of Hale Wood neere Liverpool in the County of Lancaster, and Muriel his wife and Kildare theire son. Gilbert dyed in July 1656, Muriell the 25 March 1673, Kildare the 2 February 1675. There are now living 3 sons, Edward and John Anno 1684. Edward Tarleton was intered the 28th february 1684 and left two sons Gilbert and Kildare. John Tarleton deceased the 20th of December Anno 1700. There yet remaineth his son Digby. Kildare Tarleton deceased January 22nd Anno Dni 1711. There yet remaineth his son Nicholas.' (Fitzpatrick and O'Brien 1998, 146-7).   Description

  Late 16/17th-century house or a possible tower hosue converted into a 17th century house of five bays and presently two storeys high with steeply pitched roof and lime rendered walls with base batter visible. 12th-century augustinian abbey (OF025-017001-) located to the S of the house. There is a single light ogee headed window and a round headed window at the E end of the S wall at first and ground floors respectively. Transitional ogee headed transomed and mullioned window situated at the centre of the S wall at first floor level. Inside the house there is a dog-legged staircase of late 16th/17th century date. The floors are carried on large oak beams while the internal divisions consist of wooden panels constructed from laths and plaster which is a common way of dividing space in medieval buildings.   Description

  Early Christian ringed cross-slab now located inside the chapter house of the Franciscan friary (OF025-017001-) where it can be seen lying up against the inner face of the W wall in the SW corner of the vaulted building (Fitzpatrick and O'Brien 1998, 27-30). Described by Fitzpatrick as an 'Early Christian thistle-cross variant sandstone cross-slab (0.56m x 0.64m x 0.10m). The raised circle enclosing the cross is 0.37m in diameter. Each arm of the cross is 0.11m long with slightly expanded terminals. The four spandrels of the cross are pitted (Fitzpatrick 1992).   Description

  Four late 17th century graveslabs located in the graveyard to the S of the Franciscan Friary (JKAS vol. 9, 1918-22, 23-32). A large slab resting on top of the O'Conor vault at the N end of the E wall of the graveyard is decorated with the O'Conor arms and a long inscription in Latin, which is now only decipherable in part.   Description

  Four late 17th century graveslabs located in the graveyard to the S of the Franciscan Friary (JKAS vol. 9, 1918-22, 23-32). Located at the N end of the E wall of the graveyard there is a very worn sandstone slab carved with the arms of O'Dunne. It is traditionally believed to mark the grave of Charles O'Dunne of Ballybrittas, Co. Laois, who fought in the Battle of Aughrim in 1690 (Fitzpatrick and O'Brien 1998, 146). Graveslab belonging to Maximillian O'Dempsey in the graveyard at Killeigh bears an inscription that reads 'Here lyeth the body of Maximilian O'Dempsy Lord Viscount Clanmaliere who departed the 30th of November Anno Domini 1690' (Fitzpatrick and O'Brien 1998, 146).   Description

  Burials located in the village of Killeigh to the N of the Parochial House and 40m SW of boundary of St. Patrick's R. C. church and graveyard. The burials may form part of the burial ground associated with nearby R. C. church and graveyard. Test trenching under licence no. 06E0356 was carried out as part of a pre-planning schedule for a housing development within the zone of potential for ecclesiastical remains of Killeigh, Co. Offaly. A series of trenches were excavated by mechanical digger at the house sites, road networks and green spaces. A number of burials were uncovered in Trenches 1 and 2 at the east of the proposed development. These are limited to the east of the site and the development plans have been adjusted to allow a 10m buffer zone around these features. No excavation will take place within this area. After recording the burials, they were covered in geotextile and the trenches were backfilled. The burials were on average 0.4m below ground level and were orientated east–west (Purcell 2006). These are limited to the east of the site and the development plans have been adjusted to allow a 10m buffer zone around these features. No excavation will take place within this area. After recording the burials, they were covered in geotextile and the trenches were backfilled.   Description

  Detached Church of Ireland church, built in 1644 and substantially repaired c.1837, with four-bay nave, bellcote to western gable and vestry to east. Abutting outbuildings of Abbey Farm to north. Pitched slated roof with terracotta ridge tiles and cast-iron rainwater goods. Random coursed stone and roughcast rendered walls. Date plaque reading 1644 to southern elevation. Pointed-arched window openings with tooled stone surrounds, tracery and stained glass to nave and chancel. Pointed-arched window opening to rear with timber Y-tracery and tooled stone sill. Pointed-arched door opening with cut stone surround and hoodmoulding with timber battened double doors accessing rear porch, flanked by wrought-iron railings. Square-headed door opening with battened timber door to vestry with overlight. Single-cell interior with king post roof trusses and square-ended chancel. Tiled chancel floor. Pews to nave, and gallery and stone baptismal font to rear. Medieval sandstone effigy stored in porch. Upright and recumbent grave markers to graveyard. Freestanding cast-iron bell covered by pitched slate roof. Wall to road with roughcast render, stone coping and wrought-iron gate.

• The Abbey, house, 1780–1820 · National interest
  Description

  Detached five-bay two-storey house, built c.1800, with return and extension to rear, projecting entrance porch, canted bay window to east. Set within the grounds of a former Augustinian abbey. Hipped slate roof with oversailing eaves, rendered chimneystacks and terracotta ridge tiles. Roughcast render to walls with smooth render to plinth and slight base batter. Timber sash windows with stone sills. Single-light round-headed window, single-light ogee-headed window and double-light ogee-headed transomed window to rear indicate an earlier, possibly sixteenth-century, phase of the house. Timber panelled door with brass fittings. Interior with timber dog-legged staircase which dates to the late sixteenth century. Tooled stone gate piers to road. Ranges of outbuildings accessed through snecked limestone segmental-headed integral carriage arch opening. Now used as a guest house. Multiple-bay two-storey roughcast rendered outbuildings with hipped slate roofs, timber casement and cast-iron lattice windows, timber battened doors and segmental-headed integral carriage arches.

• Farmyard complex, 1840–1880 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached corner-sited L-plan multiple-bay single- and two-storey agricultural outbuildings, built c.1860. Rear facing onto road. Situated on site of former abbey. Pitched slate roof with hipped end to south. Rendered coping and modern air vents to roof. Pebbledashed walls with smooth rendered plinth. Square-headed window openings with timber louvers. Timber battened door to entrance and integral square-headed carriage openings. Set around concrete yard with modern outbuildings to west.

  Detached three-bay single-storey former forge, built c.1860, with gable fronted entrance bay and extension to rear. Now used as a house. Fronts directly onto street. Pitched tiled roof with terracotta ridge tiles. Random coursed limestone walls with tooled limestone quoins. Replacement timber windows with concrete sills. Horseshoe-shaped former door opening to front with replacement timber window and tooled limestone surround. Rear site is bounded by random coursed limestone wall.

  Detached four-bay two-storey former parochial house, built c.1840, with two-storey return to rear, side extension and entrance porch to façade. Now in use as a domestic house. Set back from street. Pitched slate roof with terracotta ridge tiles and rendered chimneystacks. Rendered walls with quoins. uPVC windows with tooled stone sills. Round-headed timber sash window to east gable. Timber panelled door to porch flanked by timber sidelights. Cross mounted above door. Cut stone boundary plinth wall with cast-iron railings to front site. Stone outbuilding to rear with pitched slate roof.

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1840, with return to rear. Set back from road across from village green. Pitched tiled roof with rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Random coursed stone wall with cut stone eaves course. Timber sash windows with tooled limestone sills, rendered surround and red brick arches above. Round-arched red brick door opening with tooled limestone surround having pilasters, fluted frieze and archivolt. Timber panelled door and Neo-classical fanlight. Pair of wrought-iron bootscrapers. Front site enclosed by stone plinth surmounted by wrought-iron railings with urn finials to newel posts.

  Description

  L-plan multiple-bay two-storey brewery outbuildings, built c.1830, now in use as agricultural outbuildings. Located directly on roadway. Pitched slate and corrugated-iron roofs with terracotta ridge tiles. Random coursed stone walls with some roughcast render remaining. Single opening to northern elevation with timber sash window.

  End-of-terrace three-bay single-storey house, built c.1900. Fronts directly onto street. Pitched tiled roof with terracotta ridge tiles and rendered chimneystacks. Random coursed wall with quoins. • Gates/railings/walls, 1800–1820 · Regional interest
  Description

  Boundary wall and gates to graveyard and site of demolished Catholic Church, erected c.1810. Rendered stone wall with tooled coping stones, flanking tooled octagonal limestone piers raised on plinths with moulded bands and pointed caps. Wrought-iron vehicular gates flanked by pedestrian gates. Modern plaque to wall commemorating victims of the mid nineteenth-century famine. Upright and recumbent stone grave markers to graveyard. Upright grave markers have been relocated to southern boundary wall. Terracotta floor tiles of demolished church, built in 1808 and demolished in 1971, in situ to centre of graveyard.

Low rendered chimneystacks. Roughcast rendered clay walls. Timber sash windows. Porch with flat concrete canopy having timber battened door. Sited at end of short avenue with outbuildings continuing line of house and having pitched slate and artificial slate roofs and rendered walls. Rendered piers with wrought-iron gate to avenue.
