  Description

  On flat pasture land with good extensive views. Irregular shaped rounded mound (base diam 30m; top diam 15m; H 4m) with no evidence of an enclosing fosse or external bank. There are a lot of loosely piled stones around the base of the mound which is probably a result of field clearance. No evidence of any man made features on this mound. Its irregular shape and varying steepness tends to suggest that this is a natural hill. According to local tradition this is the burial site of a local chieftain and the local landowner will not touch the site as a result. It may have been a natural hill which has been used as a burial site. On first edition of OS 6-inch map site is depicted as a possible landscape feature.   Description

  This is the site of a natural ridge with a few trees planted on top. There is no evidence of any man made features on this ridge and there is no local tradition of any archaeological site in this area. Possibly a tre-ring or a natural hillock that was landscaped in the 18th-19th century. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).   Description

  Located on a slight rise of natural rock outcrop in an area of undulating countryside with good views. Disused dried up holy well (1.55m x 0.65m) known locally as St Anthony's Well with stone built cover made up of a large overlapping slabs similar to a corbelled roof (H 1.05m) with entrance (Wth 0.6m) facing S towards the mass-rock. Mass rock (OF016-027001-) located beside the well which has several initials, an IHS and a date of 1706 carved on its surface (Davies 1942). Bullaun stone (OF016-027002-) located approx. 5m to the S of the holy well, according to local information this bullaun stone came from Rahan monastery (OF016-015001-) (Pers. Comm. Darryl Hooper). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).   Description

  Located on a slight rise of natural rock outcrop in an area of undulating countryside with good views. Disused dried up holy well known locally as St Anthony's Well (OF16-027----) located 1.5m to the N and bullaun stone (OF016-027002-) located 3.5m to the S. Mass rock (dims. 2.35m x 1.3m x 0.7m) located beside the holy well which has several initials, an IHS and a date of 1706 carved on its surface (ITA Survey 1942). • Killina Presentation Convent, convent/nunnery, 1815–1820 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached multiple-bay two-storey convent, built in 1817, with extensions to west and chapel to south. Set within its own grounds. Hipped slate roof with terracotta ridge tiles, some ridge cresting, rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Pitched slate roof with cross finial to chapel. Roughcast and ruled-and-lined render to wall with smooth render to plinth and quoins. Replacement uPVC windows with painted sills to convent, round-headed stained glass windows with limestone sills to chapel. Square-headed door openings with replacement timber and glazed doors. Set back from road with rendered wall and pedestrian gate to front of site and cast-iron water pump to rear yard with corrugated and slate roofed outbuildings to side yard.

  Description

  Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, c.1905, with ER VII royal cipher and crown motif. Maker's mark 'W.T. Allen & Co. London' to base. Set in random stone rubble wall.

• Rahan Lodge, house, 1735–1745 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey over basement house, built in 1740, with return to rear. Set within its own grounds. Hipped slate roof with terracotta ridge tiles, ruled-and-lined rendered chimneystacks with terracotta pots, oversailing eaves and some cast-iron rainwater goods. Ruled-and-lined render to walls with smooth render to quoins and timber brackets to eaves course. Timber sash windows with tooled stone sills. Segmental-headed door opening with tooled limestone surround comprising four Doric style columns supporting cornice over timber panelled door flanked by diamond sidelights with spoked fanlight above. Door accessed by tooled limestone steps with wrought-iron railings. Stone outbuildings with corrugated roofs and yellow brick carriage arches, and walled garden to north west. Cut ashlar gate piers and rendered walls to front of site.
