• OF036-026 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  Situated on top of Knockbarron Hill, in an area of undulating countryside. On the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map the well is shown standing inside a woodland which is shown as Knockbarron Wood ont he 1908 ed. OS map. Poorly preserved well now dry with no other features visible. According to Purser (1918, 77) a local pattern was held here on St. John's Eve. St John's Rock (OF036-027----) which was used as a mass rock is located 125m to the NE. In 1934 the National Schools Survey of Holy Wells recorded that there was in a wood in the vicinity of Drumcullen monastery (now in ruins) (OF036-028001-), on a prominent hill, overlooking Kinnitty village and district. Ash tree growing out of side of well, crude steps descending to well. Well in a cavity, no protection around, some briars and shrubbery’ (NFC 468, 140). The survey recorded that a pilgrimage to this site occurred on the 24th of June for 9 days, ‘ending with a pattern; but of late years the pattern and bonfire are celebrated on 29th June’ (ibid.). The devotion at the well or pattern consisted of ‘three rounds, each round consisted of 3 Our Fathers and 3 Hail Marys, in clock [wise] direction; also prayers at Mass Rock (OF036-027----) nearby’ (ibid.). The water was used generally to cure ailments but had no special powers for any specific ailment. Votive offerings were left behind at the well including medals, pennies, bits of ribbons, beads etc. These offerings were placed on the sides of the well and on branches of the trees around the well. The votive offerings on the branches of the trees were placed here during the days of November. • OF036-027 Ritual site - holy/saint's stone
  Description

  Known locally as 'St. John's Rock' situated on the edge of a small wood on top of Knockbarron Hill. St Johns holy well (OF036-026----) located 125m to the SW. The stone is roughly spherically shaped and measures 2.5m across and 1.75m high. It is a weathered limestone glacial erratic with a large crevice on the S side into which are placed many religious coins and other votive offerings. It is obvious that the rock still has significant religious significance in the area. According to local information the stone was used as a mass rock during penal times. In 1934 the National Schools Survey of Holy Wells (NFC 468, 140) recorded that a pilgrimage to this site occurred on the 24th of June for 9 days, ‘ending with a pattern; but of late years the pattern and bonfire are celebrated on 29th June’ (ibid.). • OF036-028001 Church
  Description

  Early Christian foundation founded by St. Barrind in the sixth century (Purser 1918, 74-7). Located on low-lying land with river to the S, esker ridge to the N and E with motte (OF036-028004-) to the NW. Long rectangular church (ext. dims. 7.85m N-S; 28.8m E-W; wall T 1m) built of roughly coursed sandstone blocks with base batter evident at W end of N wall only. The W gable and W portion of the S wall survive to full height with wall foundations surviving elsewhere. Partially destroyed window and doorway at W end of S wall. Poorly preserved window on W gable at first floor level. Barrel vaulted chamber at W end of church (7.85m N-S; 3.5m N-S) with doorway in E wall giving access to a stone stairways which leads to first floor level. There are several fragments of window mouldings and other architectural pieces lying outside the E end of the church. On top of the W end of the S wall there is a single stone from a Romanesque arch decorated with a chevron design in false relief at the end of which there is a spiral decoration which may have joined onto a decorated capital. The other end of the stone is chamfered in order to accommodate the next stone of the arch which unfortunately is missing. There is an upright Early Christian cross-slab (OF036-028005-) located to the SE of the church with incised double lined cross with bifurcating terminals. Circular high cross base (OF036-028003-) with mortise and tenon socket illustrated by Purser (1918, 74-7) along with head of ringed cross are that all that survives of a high cross located between the W gable of the church and the graveyard wall. The ringed cross is decorated with interlace patterns with a crucifixion on one side and a triskele on the other (Purser 1918, 178). The cross-head has been recently removed from the graveyard (OF036-028002-) by Offaly County Council for safety concerns and is now on public display inside Rath R. C. Church (OF031-072----). The graveyard (OF036-028002-) contains 18th/19th-century headstones and is enclosed by a modern stone wall. (Cooke 1875, 154-6; O' Flanagan 1933, vol. 2, 51) The following folklore was recorded from Kinnitty National School; 'Drumcullen Churchyard is situated on the south side, of Knockbarron Hill and on the north side of the Camcor river. In the centre of the Churchyard stands the ruins of a monastery. It was founded by St. Barraind in the year 590 about 160 years after St. Patrick bring the true faith to Ireland. It is very old because there are only parts of the walls standing, a side wall and an end wall. There is also the remains of the cell that was in it. It is arched shape on top. On top of it is the remains of a room. There are stone steps going up from the cell to the room like a stairs. On the south end of the room there is a hole of oblong shape where the window was. On the east side of the monastery there is a big arch-way where the door was. In the monastery there are three graves. Mrs. Mooney, Glynsk, Kinnitty, Co. Offaly is in one of them, Peter Troy, and Patrick Grimes, Knockbarron, Kinnitty, Birr, Co. Offaly are in the other two. In the graveyard there are over sixty tombstones. Some of the names on them are, Owen Moran died December 10th 1866 also Margaret his wife died March 6th 1885 and James Moran dies April 10th 1909. Those three are on the one tombstone, John Egan died August 26th 1782 and he was only twenty four years old, and Kieran Dunne died in the year 1795. About fourteen yards west of the grave is where the unbaptised children are buried. There are three children buried there. About one hundred yards north west of the graveyard is an old mound or hill called Tullamor Hill. It is said by ancient people that it was a meeting place long ago where people used meet to buy and sell cattle. A tunnel runs from it to the grave yard and monks used to take refuge in it in the Penal days' (The Schools’ Collection, Volume 0820, Page 316-17) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). • OF036-028003 Cross - High cross
  Description

  The circular shaped base (Wth 0.9m; H 0.5m) of the high cross which may have been an earlier millstone and is located in the W quadrant of the graveyard (OF036-028002-) a few metres to W of the W gable of Drumcullen church (OF036-028001-). The shaft of the limestone cross is now missing and the head of the ringed cross is decorated with the crucifixion on one face and with a triskele design with interlace on the opposite face. The cross-head has been recently removed from the graveyard (OF036-028002-) by Offaly County Council for safety concerns and is now on public display inside Rath R. C. Church (OF031-072----). The cross was described by Harbison (1992, vol. 1, 75) as following: 'A cross-head with one arm still remaining lies close to an old church (OF036-028001-). Close by is what would appear to be an ancient mill-stone, which may have served as a base for the cross at some time. The cross-head is 96 cm high, and only 40cm broad now, but originally it would have measured about 60cm across the arms. It is 18cm thick. The directions (east/west) given below are notional. East Face: In the centre there is a circular raised moulding enclosing spiral decoration emanating from a central circle. There is interlace decoration in the limbs of the cross. The ring, with roll moulding at the edges, has interlace decoration. South Face: The underside of the ring has a vertical roll moulding in the centre, while the end of the arm has a panel of interlace. West Face: Centre; The Crucifixion - Christ is shown with outstretched arms, and wearing a rope-like garment. Stephaton is probably on the left and Longinus on the right. There is a hemispherical boss (Sol, the sun, or a worn human head?) at the end of Christ's arm. The other arm has been broken away. Above Christ's head there would seem to be a spiral motif. The surviving arc of the ring is similar to that on the east face, though the mouldings are higher.' Cross-referenced with OF031-072----.   Description

  Partially destroyed Motte and Bailey located on an esker ridge running N/S in undulating countryside with church (OF036-028----) and river to the S. Steep sided flat topped mound (base diam 32m; top diam 13.7m; H 6.5m) which appears to have been scarped from the esker ridge at S side only thus making it steeper at this side. The destroyed rectangular shaped bailey was located to the N of the motte which was enclosed by an earthen bank now destroyed.
